You guys I have to share something stupid I did. I also want to put this out there because I know we have quite a few people in the medical professions out there.
Jen and I were digging around the chest freezer the other night wondering what we were going to make for dinner. On the bottom of the freezer, just under the jumbo mice, we found a frozen 'Trader Joe' cioppino. (For those who don't know it's a tomato based soup with fish, shrimp, scallops, mussels various other seafood.) So, I'm thinking that sounded pretty good.
We open it up and it looks kind of freezer burned. Well the seafood part anyway. The soup part is packaged seperately and looked fine. I thawed it heat it up, pour it over some rice and we're ready to go.

I took the first bite. Strange flavor or texture or something, I'm thinking. Suddenly I realize it's not a flavor or a texture, it's a stinging sensation on my tongue and throat that's rapidly building stronger and stronger.
I spit it back in the bowl, holler, "Don't eat any!!" and head for the bathroom. My throat was burning so bad I felt like I had a bone in it or something and I'm gagging reflexively.

Next morning I had a sore throat just in that spot that has gotten worse and worse all week. I mean really bad. It felt like strep or something but with no other cold type symptoms. 4 days later, I'm on the first day that it is better than it has been. I'm just glad I didn't swallow any of it!!

Pretty crazy huh? Anybody ever have something like that happen? Anybody know what it might have been? Anybody want to come over for dinner, lol?

Lol, I think we just kept it in the freezer WAY to long. We were talking about it later and neither of us can remember buying it. I'm in no way blasting the product here. Looks like fresh it would've been really good..

Wow! Never heard of anything like that before! Have you had that same exact dish before without incident? I am wondering if you could be allergic to something in it? I have never heard of a reaction like that if the food is just spoiled. Spoiled food takes a while to cause a reaction, after the bacteria multiply inside of you. That sounds more like a bad toxin, or mechanical contaminant (like the fibers in the plant known as dumb cane that swell your throat and cause you to be unable to talk), or an allergic reaction. Since nobody else tasted it (luckily!), there is no way to know if they would have had the same reaction. Did you save the sample in case you want it tested or taken to the health dept.?

I would be interested to hear from any medical people, or microbiologists, etc, as well.

WOW sounds like an allergic reaction where it came on so fast. Scary as he11. Glad you spit.

I have not had their version of the same dish before, and we didn't save any of it. You could be right though about allergies. Over the past few years I'm suddenly 'getting' allergies that I've never had or noticed before. Mango is the only food allergy that I know of though it's really a skin allergy for me. I get 'poison oak' from it because I'm highly sensitive to urushiol oils which both plants make. I can't imagine there was mango in it though, that would be a really strange choice for that dish, though not impossible I guess.
I suspect it was old, but always frozen anyway, so I would've thought it might no longer be palatable but still not dangerous.

Good thing you didn't have any more than you did, that sounds really scary. It's sounds like choking, except due to a bad reaction or contaminate instead of something stuck in your throat.

Glad you're alright!!!

Definetly sounds like an allergic reaction! Heres a list of all the ingredients if that helps at all:

Ingredients: Alaskan cod, scallops, mussels, shrimp, crushed & diced tomatoes, water, burgundy wine [contains sulfites], onions, clams, olive oil, celery, mushrooms, clam base (cooked clams, clam juice, salt, potato flour, soybean oil, onion powder, and natural flavorings [black pepper, garlic, celery]), garlic, green peppers, spices.

Although I am not a specialist in such things, I just can't imagine how spoiled food could cause such an immediate reaction. It really does sound more like a bad allergic reaction. You should mention it to your doctor. If he thinks so too, you might consider keeping one of those epi - pens around, in case you eat something that causes a life threatening reaction, since you seem to be developing some allergies. Be sure to see what your doctor thinks about the whole thing.

Can you rescue the container with the ingredient list? Maybe you should study it, just in case. If they still make the same dish, maybe you can copy the list at the store, although it is possible they have changed it some by now.

I wonder if it was some kind of anaphylaxis. I had a friend have and anaphylactic reaction to shrimp and his mouth and throat swelled up real fast like that. I think seafood and shellfish are big offenders for that.

BINGO.........

I took too long to write, haha!

Looks like you are saved from having to find the list. Hope it sheds some light on your reaction. Maybe you should take a little with you to taste at your next doctor appointment to see if you get a reaction again, and the doc can see the results, if any.

OH JEEZE.. I don't think I could go on living without seafood. But I think it is time for some allergy tests. Thanks for brainstorming with me guys!

I know people who are allergic to various seafood, but also mushrooms seem to cause reactions in a lot of people as well. Most of the other ingredients don't seem as problematic, but there is somebody allergic to practically anything, if you look long enough.

My grandmother is deathly allergic to any kind of shellfish. She also cannot have any kind of iodine. She gets the same reaction that you described and that stew is chock full of shellfish.

Thing is though, if it were shellfish it would be out of no where. I fairly commonly eat all of those.
On the other hand, I once had to say that very same thing about mangos which were my favorite fruit and now I literally can't even touch them, or anything that touched them.

Very interesting - thanks!

I was only familiar with SOME of this stuff - lots of new info there. I saved it for future reference. You might even want to print it off to show your doctor - he might be familiar with many, but not all, of those. Seems like it COULD be several different toxins, as well as a possible allergic reaction.
