Wolmanized(treated) lumber

I know that treated lumber can't be used to make a cage, but would it be a problem to use it as shelving for the cages? I have some 4' vision cages, as well as some aquariums I would like to used for display. I was initially going to go with the metal utility type shelves they sell at lowes. I have a lot of treated lumber I didn't use for a pergola and thought that would be even better, as I could customize it. I would probably paint it as well. I wasn't sure if treated off gassed or something.

Thanks,
John

Usually treated substances give off fumes of one sort of another...it would probably be a harmless background level, but personally I wouldn't take the risk.

I really wish I had a helpful link to go with this, but many people here use little customised hammocks instead of shelves. Basically you get a few of those bathroom/hook suction cups and stitch them to some canvass (bought from any plant-store). Then you stick them at alterate angles up two sides of your viv, so your snakey can go from one to the next all the way up to the top, no trouble. They are very cheap, if your snake poops on the canvass you just clean the suction cups and change the canvass for new :)

You need 4 suction cups per hammock, and a trialngle of canvass/net fabric. 2 suction cups go on 2 sides of the triangle, 1 side is free in the internal environment, creating mini hammock.

Did I misunderstand or did you? I thought he meant shelves to stand his viv's on... :shrugs:

I'm in the trade and I've never heard of fumes from treated lumber, so if the snake won't come in directed contact with the treated I see no problem using it.

Good Luck

I would be concerned about the UTH/heat tape warming the shelves enough to release some of the chemicals. At the very least, I would research to find out if that's possible. Sometimes chemicals which are otherwise inert at room temperature work differently at warmer temps.

actually, there will be no Flexwatt in contact with the lumber. The heat tape will be on the actual shelf material which will be either melamine or particle board. The treated will only be used for the frame. The treated would then be painted.

Generally I wouldn't give two hoots about using deck lumber for shelves to build for snakes. But after Googling 'wolmanized', I think it would take some serious consideration and quite a few coats of paint before I would use it in such a setting as indoor reptile accessories.

While so long as its going to be the framing of the shelf and not in direct contact with the animals or their food, it should be ok, if going by their precautions.

Its a waste of good lumber. But if you got it laying around, and want to get rid of it. There should be no problem using it for the frame work.
