Wooden viv question

spud

Need more Corns
So i am going to get a wooden viv for my snake. but need to know how i go about fitting the UTH. I obviously can't put it under the viv as the heat won't pass through the wood, so how do i go about it? Do i drill a hole and put the heat mat in the bottom of the viv, how do i fit it to the bottom - i obviously can't use tape, so how do i go about doing it.

Thanks

I cut part of the bottom out of my snake's viv and installed a piece of plastic.

I can think of two ways.

1. Drill hole large enough to put plug through and then cut a piece of wood to cover that up with a groove cut in it to let the electric cord go threw the wood without cutting into it.

2. Cut the plug off the UTH and drill a hole just large enough for the cord to go threw and buy a replacement plug and install it on your UTH.

That's what I do.

Ok, so how do i then go about fitting it securely to the bottom of the viv? If its not secured down, it will move about, the snake could get underneath it

I put a layer of ceramic wall tiles over the top of the mat. The undersides are grooved so they allow airflow. If you stick it down in any way, then cleaning is impossible.

What Bitsy said, however I would use one large tile like a 12 x 12 if the box is big ehough or a 10 x 10. I think one large tile would work better.

or if its a 3pin plug the UTH you can unscrew it easily, pass the wire trough a whole large enough and then screw back the plug

Most of the UK UTHs now come with mains plugs that are moulded onto the wire, so you can't remove them by unscrewing one side. Something to do with EC regulations I think.

Thanks for that, looks like it will be the tile option then. Just one question, doesn't the tile get hot and therefore the snake would burn itself?

Only if you don't use a thermostat. As an unregulated UTH can reach 120 degrees (way too hot to be safe for a Corn), then I'd always recommend that you use a stat - it's especially important with a setup where the snake might run the risk of coming into direct contact with the mat surface.

Sounds ideal then! If you put the stat probe immediately on top of the tile(s) and set it to mid-80s, then the tiles will never be hot enough to cause a problem.
