Would a couple of LEDs be ok

To use as a light source just for that day/night cycle indicator?

They could be dimmed easily and im sure a small auto dim circuit could be found or made to simulate a sunrise/set.

Our place is a bit on the dark side, i'd like to provide just a tiny bit more during the day.

1-Corn snakes are nocturnal so the darker the better for them.
2-Yes LEDs are fine as far as I know.People use them in homemade vivs all the time.

As long as hey have some natural daylight - even if the room they're in is shaded - then Corns will be fine without any artificial light.

However, if you'td like lights for your own benefit, then LEDs do seem to be popular. They give off very little heat but good light.

Just beware that your Corns may hide away more when you use them. It's something you can keep an eye on and adjust, if you think the lights are altering the snake's behaviour.

I use LED light ropes that are two feet long. They work great!

I noticed a change in behaviour at first where they wouldn't come out until I decided it was "nighttime," but after a week or two they started coming out at their original times. They just had to adjust.

Plain white ones dont give off all that much light, truth be told. In fact, I started a thread in the DIY section that shows how I have my tubs set up for display purposes if your interested. I think its called "tubs done my way," or something like that...

Sorry guys, this was a stupid question. I really shouldn't even be worrying about this and it was absolutely out of line for me to even be curious about such an outlandish idea.

i use led light strips from ikea! they are awesome! a little on the expensive side but come with some awesome color change settings a dimmer, and are modular. they come in sets of 4 and can be linked up in one big line or as individual strips! very fun and they look cool too for the person keeping there snakes in a more "display" situation like me :)

they also come with a red setting so you can have them up for night viewing!
Its also all connected to one switch for super easy on and off :)

My snake vet recommended that I get some sort of artificial light for my snakes. She said that while it isn't necessary, the snakes enjoy it.

I'm not sure if I agree with her or not... although since then, I have put full-spectrum florescents on a timer in the snake room... just in case.

Also, I don't get the OPs t about it being an outlandish question? Sounds like a perfectly reasonable question to me. It gets asked about twice a month here. And lots of people, including me, simulate day/night cycles.

PS.... were you saying that you would dim the LEDs to simulate sunrise and sunset? Because that is an interesting idea. Especially since corns are crepuscular.

Wow, that is a neat setup. Are the plants real? Where do you buy those LEDs?

I am using a leftover 10 gallon flourescent lamp with a repti-sun bulb. The room gets very little natural light and I wanted to get him used to a day/night cycle. I think I'd rather use LEDs because they give off less heat and use less energy.

I like that the light looks "natural", but I think I'd rather have the LEDs.

This is the same reason I opted to use LED's

There are really only two reasons to use LED's or any light source (other than for heating). The first is for appealing visual presentation. The second is because it has been widely suggested that a day/night cycle is beneficial to the snakes if there is not enough ambient light to produce such a cycle.

In other words, if your happy with it and it isn't hurting your husbandry, then go for it!
