Would this be enough room for a hatchling?

HI all. I need some opinions here. I have a tank that is 12 x 24" by 12 " high.

I am getting three corn hatchlings soon and I had the idea of dividing one glass tank into three. They sell plastic tracking at Home Depot and I can cut sheets of plexiglass to slide into the tracks which would give me 3 tanks in one, each tank 8 x 12 by 12" high. The plexiglass would stand on end in the tanks.

Is this enough room for small corn snakes and how big should they get before I have to move them?

I have figured out how to heat the backs of this 3 in 1 tank idea so I can have a warm and cool side although, is this too close? Should I divide it lengthwise? I just though lengthwise would be squishy.

If this doesn't make sense, I can draw a diagram.

Thanks!
Tracy : )

That's plenty big enough for a hatchling. You could keep it there for several months. Probably until it gets to be ~18" or so.

I'm not sure about big enough: for hatchlings yes, heat control may be a little difficult. I have divided tanks into two areas (rather hubby did it for me), he used slicone to adhere the plexiglass to inside. This worked pretty well and was easy to remove. The only other thing is fitting a lid so the snakes can't crawl from one to the other. good luck, susan

sounds just fine. I'd run a strip of heat tape or 3 inch flexwatt along the bottom on the back or front. If they do squeeze between the lid and the glass in to their neighbors place it's not the end of the world, but you'll want to keep that in mind as a potential flaw with the design.

Great. Thanks everyone.

Ya, the jumping room over the plexiglass is a bit of a stumper. Not to mention when I take the screen off, they are all open. I just know there's an easy solution that I haven't figured out yet. I think it involves the tracking going horizontally across the top underneith the lip of the top of the tank and an additional piece of plexiglass that slides along that. Hmmm.......? :shrugs:

It would be nice to come up with a solid concept to allow others here to turn a large tank into a dividable, expand-o system that can grow with the snake.

I'll post some pics if I come up with an interesting, effective solution.

Thanks again!
Tracy

I saw a modified 10 gal at the local show recently that seemed to have fixed the divider issues.

the divider came up as high as the normal walls, and the tank had 2 separate metal framed wire screen lids that dropped down tightly into each half, resting on the lip at the top of the tank. The divider extended to the top of the lids so it fit between them
