so, when i handled cecil today - my son said "look dad, his tail is black" and as he said the tip of his tail about 1/8-1/4 inch was dark - and there was a small cut and red blood - as i touched it to check it the little piece came off in my hand dead - so whatcha think? ? - he's 6 months old - handled basically only by me - 20 gallon long 2 hides - water rock - in aspen - no pinch points i can think of - seen it before ?? - suggestions ?? - comments ??

It sounds like he had a retained shed that constricted his tail, causing blood flow to cease and killed the tissue. It's not something that is uncommon, unfortunately. I would check his humidity, and always be sure to check his shed skin for any missing pieces, etc. Sorry to hear it happened!

sounds reasonable - he's had 2 sheds since i've had him - have to admit that i didn;t examine the 2nd as closely as the first although it was a nice looking shed all one piece but again - i did not examine it and prove every fraction - kinda hard to do that but i'll try from now on - again - th'x
