well my snake sunflower is the nicest snake ever.she has never tried to bite me.and i have had her for 4 months.well i left her with my aunt and uncle for two weaks cause i went to florida and it didn't try to bite her but it bit my uncle.why?

Perhaps he smelled funky or make a sudden movement or something. Something upset her snake mind for sure. Wouldn't think anything off it though.

he may have...

been too quick or slightly careless while trying to get hold of her. snakes...like lions are never really tamed, maybe she had gas and didn't want to be handled or maybe she just doesn't like dudes or...maybe your uncle had a funky smell, ahhahaha. who knows. i wouldn't worry too much about it.

I have a little brother (currently 5) who seems to give any of my animals the inate sense of utter terror... for no good reason! The dogs and snakes all run from him on site.

I think snakes can be empathetic to your situation too, others may not agree... but if your calm and not nervous to be holding them they'll be fine and calmer as a whole...

But though she did bite at your uncle, you'll probably find she never will again. Esp if she's not prone to it.

Snakes are really sensitive to pheramones (the "emotion" chemicals that all animals and humans give off). Some colognes and perfumes contain pheramones that trigger a fear response in snakes. I've heard people on other forums swear that they'll never use CK1 again! Perhaps your uncle was just wearing the wrong aftershave?

my husband used to be nervous around snakes, and for some reason I think they could sense that and every he would hold one they would go crazy.. but he would hand the snake to me and it would calm down and be fine... now he loves them and just got into breeding ball pythons. :D

My snakes have never bitten anything except for food and have not even tried. But like MichaelBoyko I believe that snakes can sense emotions and fear. Whenever my mom tries holding one of my snakes and she is nervous they start moving really fast and try to get away from her. But when I take them back from her they'll calm down. It has as much to do with the persons disposition as it does with the snakes. When My mom is calm she has no problems with either Checkers or Lyra.

Haha, Checkers is such a cute name! (sorry, off topic)

Anyway, I agree with pretty much everyone else though, snakes probably can sense how you're feeling one way or another (phermones, body language, whatever...). My snake starts trying to "run" when she's held by people who aren't real comfortable with her. Maybe yours just felt more threatened. Anyway, hope things are going well with her now and that there have been no more biting episodes.

I think all the responses you got tell the story! It seems we all have the "gee, I don't understand why (s)he bit you??" story I know I have had a couples of times I just didn't understand why, and I figured it was a perfume or perhaps a bit of fear or discomfort at being around a snake!
I wouldn't worry too much about it! :)
