Young corn and feeding

I know I know another one of these but I didnt know what to search for and such. I have a Lavender and Im not sure how old it is. The earliest recorded shed was 9/19. S/he is about 14" long and I dont have a scale at the moment so I dont know the weight. Last night was feeding night and I fed it 2 pinkies. Today 24 hours later I checked on it and there arent any food bumps from what I can see. Is this bad? Should I move up in mouse size? Advice?

Yes, I'd say it sounds like a fuzzy might be worth a try next feeding time. Remember that as food items get bigger, then frequency of feeding should decrease.

It's a good idea not to handle for 48 hours after feeding. Even if there aren't any bumps, you could still risk a regurge. S/he's likely to be calmer at this time, as all of his/her physical resources are being taken up by digesting. Think about how you feel when you've just gotten nice and comfy after eating a huge Christmas dinner, then some bright spark suggests taking a brisk walk!

I am a wimp and always do double lg. pinks before moving to fuzzies. Depending on where you get your fuzzies from their sizes vary a ton, but you could always save money if your not sqeamish and cut the fuzzy in half lengthwise for a few feedings before giving the whole thing- just cut while frozen:)

Don't the uh... insides leak out when you thaw? Or do you not thaw in hot water?

From your description and the 14” size I would say your snake is obviously from 2009, meaning probably only 5 or 6 months old. At that age it should still be eating creamed corn or pureed corn. Anything more substantial than that is surely going to cause an impaction of some kind. The reason you are not seeing feeding lumps the next day is because the pinkies have been elongated as the muscles of the digestive track try to move the solid food down. A snake that age is not able to do that.

Get creamed corn (I prefer Jolly Green Giant brand) and heat it on the stove, not in the microwave. Heat it until it just starts to bubble and then remove it from the heat and allow it to cool to 82* Use a thermometer for this, don’t guess. As soon as it has cooled to the right temp feed it promptly before it cools any more. Offer it to you snake with a brown or black plastic spoon. Metal spoons interfere with the magnetic conflagration of the corn reducing its nutritional value. White plastic seems to scar the snake for some reason.

A snake the size of yours should be eating approximately 4cc of corn per week. Don’t panic if that varies a little from week to week. Once the snake reaches 17 3/8” you may proceed to feed whole corn in the same manner. At that time you can start to supplement with a little crushed mouse juice. Be sure the mice are clean before you crush them.

Hope that helps.

LOL wow. So what I gather is that once the baby gets to about a year old its big enough to handle larger food such as whole kernel corn or even peas? I do love your answer
