Your Favorite Substrate?

Hi, I'm very new to owning snakes. I've had my striped normal since friday. I was wondering what everyones favorite substrate is. I've read ALOT of stuff on the internet, and the substrates i see most often sugested are: Astroturf, aspen, newspaper and calcisand. which is best? I have mine on calcisand right now, but have aspen shavings that i was thinking of switching too.
This is actually my moms snake, and she definately does not want newspaper in there because she thinks its ugly.

anyways thanks

yikes

Well cali-sand can be dangerous! Many bad things can go wrong when using cali-sand. No matter what is says on the package it *can* and *has* caused impaction in reptiles which can lead to death. Even if you do not feed your snake on it, the sand must be terribly irratating to their scales. I will get the snake off this a.s.a.p.

Aspen is a great healthy choice!

yeah

And you'll like the aspen. Its nice looking and easy to clean for most tanks. :)

I too totally agree with bmm
use aspen bedding!!!

It's the best substrate that you can find....at least from what I think. It's good to look at, easy for clean ups, and cheap!!

Bmm, are you referring to all reptiles when you say calci sand can cause death?? Just wondering because I keep my leopard gekkos on a playsand/calci sand mix. Now if I didnt put calci sand down THEN there would be a problem as they could ingest normal sand thus leading to impaction. Calci sand is there to prevent impactions and also acts as a dietry supliment. So although I wouldn't use caci sand for my snakes, it is not dangerous for all reptiles! Just clearing that up :D

well

Actually I have followed many a lengthy coversation on kingsnakes leopard gecko forum and quiet a few people have had "accidents" resulting in death from cali-sand impaction. And I am often hearing that its totally bad, often now.

Remember, no one is responsible for watching what pet products put on their bags/boxes. If they want to say it will cure or wont impact without even researching it, thats fine and there is no one to say they cant put that like there is for humans.

But I suppose one would have research himself.herself.
