Blue and 2 pinkies down the hatch!

patm1313

Pyromaniac
So I came home yesturday and found Flame blue (pink really) and was wondering if I was going to feed him. I recentley had gotten a wall calender (Snakes 2008) and had plotted out all the feeding times for this month, and the feeding time had fallen right when he was blue (yesturday).

Another event was coming: I was going to try to feed him 2 of my larger pinkies this time around. So, I was really worried that he would not eat, or would regurge because of all the stress added from the extra food and the fact he was blue.

Well, I went with the plan, and fed him 2 pinkies, and he got them down easily! I was really surprised.

Anyhow, my question is this: On friday, when I'm almost sure that he'll have freshly shed or just about to do so, should I continue with the two pinkies, or should I lower it back down to one?

Thanks,
-Patm1313 :dgrin:

I wouldn't feed double pinks on a four day schedule.

Really? Because I had a feeling that I was feeding him to little when I was feeding him single ones on a four or five day schedule.

Another thing. Here's how my calender is set up (as far as feeding goes)

On monday and friday of the 1st week I feed him, and then on the wednesday of the next week I feed him. This pattern continues.

I feel a little bit bad saying this, but the only reason for the feeding times is because it conforms very niceley to my schedule. So, is it worth changing it?

And nanci: How many days should I wait between feeding times for double pinkies?

Well, what if you fed a single on Friday (four days since last meal) and doubles on Wednesday and Monday, (five days)?

He needs at least 4 days to rebuild his digestive system. He'd be better off with 2 pinkies every 5-7 days.

A lot of people suggest not feeding in the blue as well as a lot of people have no trouble with it.
My experience...Our Flame (charcoal hypo) ate 2 pinkies in the blue (although I was going against Mr. Soderbergs good advice in his book:uhoh:)
and sure enough when Flame shed it was incomplete...it shed nicely down to the food bump then the rest was left on him.

As far as scheduling around your schedule,it doesn't sound bad just realistic.:)

I took a Gladware bowl and cut a hole in the lid.
I thaw the pinkies and put them in the bowl and the bowl in the repective vivs.
They come over and eat and I can tend to other things if absolutely needed (like vomitting kids lately:eek1:) because they are in their respective secure homes(the snakes that is)...
They have eaten in the bowl and actually do not come out for about 30 minutes after they are done eating (perhaps waiting for more to appear) so no substrate issues.

Now I know people say not to feed on the vivs because the snake associates the opening of the lid and your reaching in as food so they may strike.

I feel like since I feed them at 10:30pm with lights out dark, and I wear gloves to mask my scent when placing in the gladware container it is different enough from when we handle them during the day...lights on etc.

But again only my experience:shrugs:

Has he regurged before?

Thanks Nanci, I will definetley try alternating the meals. :)

Ok, I'm going to try what Nanci said as well.

You have a snake named Flame as well? Small world. Anyway, I never really thought that feeding before a shed could cause shed problems, but that makes sense now. I'm probably not going to worry about it unless something abnormal happens during this shed. I think the food will have digested by the time he sheds.

I'm glad. I have a crazy schedule.

That's interesting. I've never heard of a method like that before. Maybe i'll try it sometime.

I feed my snake in a 5 gallon plastic tank, outside of the home tank. The only reson why is because (like you said) they can associate badly.

Has he regurged before?

Nope. *Knocks on wood* I just figured with all the added stress of shedding and a bigger meal, that there may be a greater risk of doing so.

Thanks,

My concern with feeding whilst in shed is not only the shedding issues to follow, but usually the snakes are not receptive to food / handling / or company for that matter, and shy away from the prey items. I skip that feeding when it comes time to it but you could make it up after hes done shedding.

There are reports of regurges when snakes are fed during blue, too. I go ahead and feed if I've pulled the snake out to feed, with the food already thawed, and discover the snake is blue, but if I already know they are blue, I skip. Inez just refused her first meal EVER last week- she was blue. I've had her a year and a half.

I don't know- I've just read it here.

Maybe you read posts by ME that said that, because I've seen it a number of times. But it only seems to happen with hatchlings under about 30g, and rarely with hatchlings over 15 or 20g. It seems to happen when a large meal is offered while the snake is going into blue. I don't think I've seen it happen with hatchlings that were opaque or clearing.

I found Flame in the height of his blue when I fed him. He weighs in at 22 grams, the last weigh in being last wednesday. I still might skip the shed feeding though.

Yup, when my beautiful Lugosi had a regurge I told Dean about it. Being a lav I just didnt know he was blue. He regurged. I paniced and messaged Dean. I think this was back in December.
