How did you get started?

Forgive me if this question has already been asked a million times. If it has, maybe you can point me to some of those threads?

So... what made you want to breed corn snakes? What projects did you start off with? Did you have any knowledge of genetics before you planned to breed?

I've been seeing all these wonderful posts by you all of your new clutches and it fascinates me. I work in a cancer research facility and I'm planning to major in genetics when I go to school to better my job, and I see breeding corns as a definite hobby in the distant future.

I have seen it asked it passing before, but don't think there was a specific thread.

For us, we didn't start out planning on breeding. I just wanted one snake and that kind of snow-balled into twenty snakes before I knew it. At that point, when we really started learning more about the genetics involved and found ourselves drooling over the various morphs and morph combos we began leaning towards breeding.

In the beginning we started off just trying to prove what out earlier snakes had for hidden genes and this year we've kick started a few projects we've been planning since we first began considering breeding.

For us it's still more of a hobby, and there's nothing more rewarding that watching all of the little hatchlings pip for the first time.

For me it was wanting to grow my own favorite morphs. That seemed more satisfying than just buying them from someone else.

I wouldn't say I'm all that familiar with genetics (many of my friends are geneticists), but I was plenty familiar with Mendelian genetics, so cornsnake genetics was pretty straightforward.

Thanks for all that replied.

I honestly see myself going down this route as well. Not in the near future, as all I have is one snake, but I've been interested in reptiles and herpetoculture for a long time now and I know it's going to be inevitable that I will breed at least once in my life time.

Mites.

Yup. Thats what started me down this path.

The wee buggers were on a baby snake I'd bought for my daughter. I went in search of a remedy that wouldn't kill my tiny tiny boy and found this forum. I found what I was looking for, and more in the Morph and Breeding forums. I was hooked and have been ever since.

Enjoy!

I started off just getting 2 snakes for pets. I had read a lot of info online for a year before deciding to buy them. Then I found this site. I lurked around for a while before becoming a member. Then, that was it, all the beautiful morphs threw me over the edge. I was hooked and my collection rapidly grew.

This is my first year breeding and I am loving every minute of it. The anticipation of my first pippies is killing me though! LOL
