Getting FedEx Certified...

ALL YOUR BASE
Ok: I have read that huge thread at Fauna Classifieds...

I've set up an account with FedEx, printed and filled out the form to send with my package and ordered some supplies from Superior. Once I get my boxes I plan to call FedEx and ask to speak to my rep about sending my test package.

This all sound right?

Anyone done this recently and had it go smooth? I've heard about ppl calling their rep and getting responses like, "we don't ship snakes".

Should I expect to be able to ship snakes soon?

Tell me your stories!

Some get it done in a week or two, some in several months.

You're on the right track already. Go ahead and call your rep now, don't wait for your boxes to come. Get the paperwork going. Hopefully you'll get a competent rep and they'll handle things nicely. If they ever give you garbage about not shipping snakes, just ask to speak to someone else or a higher up. Everyone that I've talked to though, knew that they did ship snakes. Some were unsure of the limitations and what had to be done about it, but at least knew they did.

First time I got certified took about three weeks total. FedEx messed up and somehow lost my certification and I had lost my paperwork (make copies of everything they send you!! Don't make my mistake. That way if something happens you have all documentation). The second time it took almost three months over last summer - I lost a lot of business b/c I couldn't ship. I had about 4587 different reps in that time and each one was clueless with what was going on.

Bit of an update about how my process is going:

I sent off my test package on Oct 9. On the 14th I received notice that my package has passed inspection. I am now awaiting the legal documents from my Account Rep.

Looks like I'll be able to ship soon! :D

Glad its going smoothly for you so far. Just a reminder to SAVE everything you get from them, including test pkg results. Just in case...

No kidding! I got sort of lost in limbo twice.. Had to email my rep a couple times to get it going again. I got the feeling that this isn't the sort of thing they deal with regularly..

On Thursday the 16th I received an email with the legal doc in PDF form. I printed that and faxed it to FedEx the next morning...

As of Friday, October 17th I am now officially Certified!

You mentioned that you "read the huge thread on FaunaClassified"... do you have a link to this thread? I'm working on becoming FedEx certified myself.

Congrats on being certified!

I'm glad things went smoothly and I hope they go as smooth for me when I'm ready to get certified! :D

Awesome, If more people did this then maybe FedEx would realize how much business we are providing them with.
Definitely keep all of your paperwork.
You also might want to contact the local FedEx shipper you plan on using before your first shipment. I didn't and then shipped and got home to a voice message that they "don't ship reptiles" ( I had labeled the box, very small and inconspicuously as per the Lacy Act) and that they were now closed. My BP had to sit overnight while I called and emailed various people within FedEx to prove I was certified. It worked out in the end, but it was quite a headache. I am known as the "snake-guy" there and they all now know that they do in fact ship reptiles...
PS) The girl that initially noticed what I had written as the contents now wants to buy a BP from me...

Good story!

I got certified a few months ago. My rep said he didn't know they shipped snakes until he got my paperwork and thought it was pretty neat. Start to finish it took just over 2 weeks.
