Not on the heat mat after feeding

Hiya folks,

A quick question, I do apologise if it is a bit of a silly question but best to be safe than sorry I suppose.

Basically our snake was fed last night and normally he goes into his hide which is on the heat mat. and we don't see him for a few days. Well I got up this morning and he is outside his hide on the side of it and not really getting any of the benefit of the heat mat.

So my question is. Should I just leave him be, or should I do something else??? i.e move his hide a bit so at least part of him is on the heat mat area.

I don't fancy moving him because the thought of clearing out undigested mice after he has regurgitated it is not really my cup of tea :D

Any help or advice would be fantastic :D

Let your snake decide what temp he wants to be at. Does he have a hide over an unheated area? Generally, the more hides he has to choose from, the better. Even a paper towel tube makes a good hide; snakes love them!

I like paper towel hides as you can put them all the way from the cool side to the warm side, so the snake can get the exact spot it likes without stressing....
And they just appear in my kitchen every week....

Yea he has plenty of hides both in the cool side and the warm side, but it's just a bit out of character because normally he vanishes after feeding for a couple of days but hasn't this time

All sorted now just got back in from work and saw him going into his hide.

Phew had visions of having to clear the viv tonight lol.

Thanks for the advice chaps and chapesses.

:D

I am wondering about this, too. Normally, Sienna either hides under the newspaper after feeding or hangs out in her warm hide. All day yesterday, she was in the hide on the cold side (around 71-73 degrees). I thought that was weird, considering I had fed her Saturday night and she has hides on the warm side and in the middle. I guess Sienna knows best....

Like Nanci said, snakes go where ever they want. I think they stress us out more then anything when they don't go where you want them to go. (EX: he should be on the warm side to digest his food but is staying on the cool side).

Do you know what your temps are on the warm side? I don't know what your set up is like, but...

My snake use to do the same thing until I came across this site. Prior to this, every time I would feed my snake he would go on to the warm side for a couple hours and then go to the cool side for a the rest of the digestion time. At first I was little stressed about it, but snakes go where ever they want, right?? He just prefers the cool side over the warm side.

I was not using a digital thermometer w/ a probe to accurately detect the temp on the warm side. All I had was a stick on one that isn't very accurate and usually just measures room temp. Someone on this site told me to get one of those b/c these mats can get pretty hot. I was like ok, but every time I felt the warm side it wasn't that warm.

Well to make a long story short I purchased one and OMG, it was reading 119 degrees. NO WONDER why he never stayed on that side. Well now that I purchased that and a dimmer to regulate the heat pad, he NEVER goes on the cool side anymore.

Just a thought.....:wavey:

Exact the same here, at least i think, still don't have a probe. The closest reptile store is 33km away from here so can't go that often. But I'm turning 18 next month and I'm getting the larger viv and everything that goes in it (inclusive the probe thermometer) and my amel doesn't seem to have problems at the moment.
