Hog Island Boa Info?

I'll be getting my first corn in the next 2 weeks and have heard some great things about the Hog Island Boa as well. I'm considering this as my second snake later on. However, I want to get some info on it first. I cannot seem to find a complete care sheet for them, can someone give me some info on them? How does their care compare to a corns'? Any info/advice is appreciated and welcome :)
 
Females Hogs can and do get 7 feet. Males are a bit smaller, but I recommend looking into a Costa Rica or Caulker Cay boa instead. Cays MAX OUT at about 5 feet, 5 feet normal for Costa males.

With all boas, the same general care sheet works. I recommend you pick up this book. It's very good.
 
Hogg Islands are a locality BCI (Boa Constrictor Imperator). Google for BCI care sheets, and you should be able to find the info you need :).

Just remember not to overfeed a boa. It's bad for their health to grow too fast.

Good luck! I love my HI girl to pieces :). I could hold her all day long, if the little Pomeranian who is pretty much "glued" to me would let me!
 
From what I've heard about the smaller locality boas, their temperaments can be a lot less manageable than the Hog Isles. That's the big plus with those... the vast majority are very nice snakes. (I say vast-- we had one who was the meanest snake I've ever met)

If you're interested in boas, also check out the rosy boas. We have one that is just the sweetest guy ever.

Columbians get big, if your looking for a dwarf boa I also suggest caulker cay boas. I have 2 and I love them.

"Red tail boas" can mean a variy of the Boa c. constrictors, all get large.

Have all you boa lovers seen this thread? USARK needs your support, NOW, because they are fighting very hard on our behalf to make sure anyone can own boas in the future. I think Andrew said one time that their expenses are something like $30,000/month. Please join- there is a student membership for $20!
 
My male hog is a sweet little guy, though he did want to hiss & strike at just about everything when he was little. I keep him in a 60 gallon, I got a sweet custom made 100% SECURE viv because I didn't trust him in the diy vivs I have for my corn/spotted python; my hog is strong.

There he is (in his old viv) in a paper towel tube, he's about 3 and a half years old, 54" long, and almost 3 pounds.

I keep him like you would an ordinary BCI.
 
You guys are making me want a boa. I already have been looking at Caulker Cays, Now that I have a full time job, I just might have to get one in the near (summer time) future lol. I blame you all! :p

Hehehe YAY spread the addiction lol. I cant wait to get a job so I can spoil my pets even more.
 
Okay, after lots of research (at the expense of my homework lol!) i have gotten mixed responses. I'm set on a male Hogg Island Boa and even found a local breeder! But I have a few questions

Do boas NEED heat lamps? I know corns don't and that most snakes don't care for bright light, but do boas need heat lamps? Or will an UTH suffice?

I know that it couldn't stay in here forever, but would a 20g long tank with a sliding/locking lid be okay for a young Hogg? For how long? (obviously dependant on growth and feeding schedule, but ball park time?)
 
Boas do NOT need heat lamps; UTH works fine. Lamps with UVB/UVsomething bulbs are used to enhance the colors, though I don't know if this is true or how well it helps.

Dunno about the other things.
 
We keep ours in a stacking cage system. No overhead light for him. Just a UTH set at a higher temp than the corns.
When I first got Leonard he was in a 20 long/sliding top. I think he was in it about 6 months and was fine. Now he is in a 4foot by 2 foot cage with sliding glass doors. He is doing great and is a real love bug!

He came from Outback although I do not recommend them. He was covered in mites as are many of the snakes they sell since they do not breed anything themselves except ball pythons.
