Not a lot of canals over here anymore, trucks and trains took over. Some of the more sea level areas have canals because there's so much water it's the best way. My experience with a bargepole was the ones with a hook end on the small boats in the USN. We used them to assist mooring, pulling the boat, grabbing lines.
