Well, all the prep work paid off. Yesterday we had Nate's party that included a 90 minute reptile presentation including a tortoise, blue-tongued skink, alligator, tegu, python and lots more. Of course, the grand finale was a baby corn. We were able to keep the whole thing a surprise, and he had no idea what was going to come after the python. Here are a few of the big finale:

After a quick photo op, "FireBlaze" was put right into his new habitat. He spent the first two or three hours exploring, and wound up on the 'lip' at the top edge of the tanke for quite a while. After that, he settled down into that hide in the back corner. This morning we see a few tunnels and he seems happy. Today we are going out to get a background and another hide or two. Good times, and thanks to everyone here who helped me with advice!

This reminds me why I started breeding cornsnakes,hope he has alot of fun times wth his new pet!:cheers:
 
We're off to the reptile and craft stores...silk vines and hides on the way. I think he needs something 'tighter' to hide in. Nate also hasn't seen an adult corn before...so he'll get a chance to see what FireBlaze will look like one day at the store.

This is fun! He's DYING to hold him again...we figure a short handling session on Thursday (five days since moving in) and first feed on Friday. Timing sound OK?
 
I would not handle the snake until he's had a successful feeding. But the feeding could include limited gentle handling i.e. transferring him to his feeding bin and then back to his viv. If he seems super-calm it would be okay to hold him for one or two minutes on the way to his feeding container.

Remember you want to feed a slightly smaller mouse for the first feeding than what you think he should be eating, and then wait a minimum of 48 hours for him to digest before handling.
 
Aww! Best birthday, ever! i mean, I really can't think of anything cooler. The kids were probably drooling over all the reptiles and thinking, "I want one!" and lucky for Nate, he got a corn snake at the end! I'm glad everything worked out and you were able to thoroughly surprise him.

Thanks everyone. He had a great time, and Fire Blaze (a name only a 7 y.o. boys could come up with) seems to have settled in nicely. He's exploring his habitat, and likes the vines and other things we put in today. He seemed shy for most of the day, but true to a nocturnal creature, he's out on the prowl right now. We'll give him a few days before snapping a few pics and sharing.
 
This is just awesome! I'm really happy for you guys, and the little scaley one as well. Its nice to know he has a home where he will be well cared for!

As time progresses, I think you shall discover that there is in fact very little a reptile (or animal store in general) offers that you cannot find bigger, better, and CHEAPER at a craft or hardware store.

I look forward to updated pics of the tank soon, and of the little fella as he grows up!

I'm sure.....we got the vines at a craft store for a lot less than what was at the herp store. I tried making my own hide from a terracota tray, but broke it. Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow, it was only $0.98 - one tenth the price of the cheaper hides at the rep store.

On this note....how long after the pink 'disappears' should I wait before transferring back to the viv?

Im a bit of a novice compared to most ppl on here, i usualy wait about 5-10 min then hold the feeding container inside the viv and let her slither out. Someone will correct me if this wrong, just what i have been doing and seems to be doing good.

What an awesome Bday for your boy and amazing pics, congrats!!!!!
 
I usually wait until the lump has stopped moving down the body and the snake is moving about a bit, then gently lift it back into its viv...
