SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy broke into a popular Outback zoo, fed a string of animals to the resident crocodile and bashed several lizards to death with a rock, the zoo's director said Friday.

<Photo caption> In this CCTV image, the boy throws a turtle over a wall at the Alice Springs Reptile Center.

The 30-minute rampage, caught on the zoo's security camera, happened early Wednesday after the boy jumped a security fence at the Alice Springs Reptile Center in central Australia, said zoo director Rex Neindorf.

The child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoo's beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to "Terry," an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile, said Neindorf.

The boy also fed several live animals to Terry by throwing them over the two fences surrounding the crocodile's enclosure, at one point climbing over the outer fence to get closer to the giant reptile.

In the footage, the boy's face remains largely blank, Neindorf said, adding: "It was like he was playing a game."

By the time he was done, 13 animals worth around $5,500 had been killed, including a turtle, bearded dragons and thorny devil lizards, Neindorf said. Although none were considered rare, some are difficult to replace, he said.

"We're horrified that anyone can do this and saddened by the age of the child," Neindorf said.

Alice Springs police said they are unable to press charges against the boy because of his age. Children under age 10 can't be charged with criminal offenses in the Northern Territory. His name was not released because of his age.

Neindorf said he plans to sue the boy's parents.

The boy's small size is probably the reason he didn't trip the zoo's security system, which relies on sensors to detect intruders, Neindorf said.

"I just want people to learn that they can't let their children go and run amok," Neindorf said. "If we can't put the blame onto the child, then someone has to accept the responsibility."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the abuse of animals at a young age is one of the biggest indicators of serial killers as adults?!

Disgusting story.

Where the heck were the parents!!! Not only is it sick and twisted and shows a disturbed psyche (looking at parents again), but I'd sure as heck want to know if my 7 yr old was playing feed the giant croc! Ugh, I'm glad they're sueing the parents, someone should have been watching that kid in the first place.:headbang:

That kid needs help, and must be punished by law.
Don't know how and to what extremity- but this can't stay as it is without proper handling of the situation. He must understand the severity of what he has done

At that age, I think its more a reflection of the parents, or at least their lack of responsibility in even allowing him to get away from them like that. If he was 14 or 15, then yeah, he knew what he was doing and deserves punishment. But at 7, that kid needs help and new parents. The parents should be held responsible.

The thing is we are only being given a small amount of information in this story....
Does the kid have learning problems or is he mentally challenged in someway...
Before we all start hollering for his blood there may be mitigating circumstances surrounding his mental ability to appreciate what he has done....
I am not in any way condoning this behaviour and it makes me sick to the stomach...
But we need to know every angle on this before we can sit and judge what has happened....

If he is suffering from some sort of mental illness naturally things should be handled differently. But the kid still needs help, no matter how you look at it.
If he is capable of doing something like that, boundaries must be set for him

That is horrible! I'm sorry but I have a 7 year old niece and she knows perfectly well if the things she does is right or wrong..she knows this would be wrong to do..and I think any 7 year old (with a proper up bringing) would understand to respect animals and not do something like this..This child is either mentally ill or is acting out of abuse or just plain mis-guidance from bad parents...

This is a horrible thing to do and someone definitely needs to claim responsibility for it..I hope this teaches his parents a lesson..and I hope the parents can find some way to show or tell the child the wrong he has done..

I just saw this on Drudge. What's really scary to me is that this child's older brother got in trouble a few years ago for abusing that same croc. It's like a whole family of future serial killers. The article says that the family is well-known in the area. I bet they are.

According to Mr Neindorf, the “nasty” boy’s brother was part of a group who attacked Terry the crocodile about five years ago.

This sort of put me in mind of the story about the boy who killed "Butter" the burmese python last year or two years ago...the same unflinching, unaffected type of kid did that, except in that case, the dad grabbed the boy and they took off, never to be heard from again. At least they know who's responsible for this incident.

You are exactly correct. I went to high school with a guy, Jason Masse, down in Texas who was put to death in 2001 for the double murder of a 13 yr old girl and her 14 year old step brother. He cut her head and hands off and they never found them. He tortured and killed numerous animals in his younger years. There is a book about him called "Bad Blood".
This kid needs serious mental help before his next "rampage" is on humans....

That's weird... some security systems are triggered by even cob webs?!?!? :shrugs:

The parents should be responsible for the $ and maybe a judge should decide if the kids should be removed from their parents who are obviously not giving them a proper education which would include moral values besides direct supervision. :angry01:

The kids in the other hand need psychological treatment. :awcrap:

I thought the same thing, even if he can't be prosecuted, he should still be sent to be psychologically evaluated. Maybe the family life has alot to do with it too, so they should look into that as well. But usually people get more violent as they "mature", and at this rate he will likely be some form of psychopath for the rest of his life. What compells such a young child to do such a thing, these crimes are'nt just careless, they show a huge red flag to a mentally distirbed child!!!

Also this must have happened at night, and I can't think of any normal parents that would let their 7yr old child roam free, especially at night.
