125 gallon too much?

Laura_Leigh

Fluffy & Cinder's Mommy
I'm debating converting a 125 gallon (72x18.5x23.5 inches) into a tank for 2 corns that we haven't gotten yet.... Would that be a bit too much for them? Also, does anyone know where I can get some of those locking plastic tops that they used to have EVERYWHERE? They fit down in the lip of the tanks and lock into place. I can't seem to find them anywhere anymore, and they were the best thing ever... I need 3 for this tank...

IMO, there is no such thing as too big. You can always add more hides to make their home more comfortable.

Would i think it's ok to put a CS in there that is only a couple months old? You betcha! Just plaster that thing with hides, plus i think a nice big viv with a lot of stuff in it looks nice :)

As for the lid, i would use something like this and then use some of these to lock it on good

oh we can do hides.... I was thinking maybe a couple of fake plants and trees and a few natural hides... and I was thinking about the astroturf style bottom.... since its really too deep for me to reach the bottom without climbing..

The only thing about that astroturf type bedding is that it needs to be taken out and cleaned every time they poop (once a week), whereas aspen can be spot cleaned (take out the spot with the poop and replace with new).

And all of those hides sound good :)

I'm not familiar with the gallon measurements but i think i read somewhere that 40 gallon is enough for an adult snake (note:i could be wrong) So maybe divide it into 3 tanks and get another corn snake, you know you will sooner or later xD

I'd love a tank of that size and it sounds like a great idea to make it two tanks if you can keep the other snake out of the other side. As for the lids. Just buy one online or from a pet store. Any clips would work..just make sure they work.

I always agree with Haarstad ;) I also believe there is no such thing as too big. I think the bigger the better. As he says, place hides and all kinds of stuff.

A 20 gallon is enough but bigger is better. To Laura..If you want more snakes then make it into 3 tanks :)...this also follows animals..The more the better :D

I've used these clips and absolutely hate them. They don't seem to make a tight fit. I can move the corners up with very little pressure, and then sometimes they start to pop off. Plus, it can be difficult to find a place on the screen top where they'll fit on. I bought some of these and like them a lot:

They're easy to get on the cage, but a little difficult to take off. But they sure hold the top on very snug.

I also think that tank would make a great double viv. You could get a large UTH and put it in the center to get a nice gradient in both sides.

Funny you mention this, just the other day I was kicking that idea around myself. After doing some measurements in our living room, I decided to go with two Zilla 40 Critter Cages and I found a stand that will hold both nicely, one on top of the other, yet, easy access into both.

Just note, if you put in a divider, you may want to get that cut from a local plastics company that can make it out of acrylic - reason being, it may be easier for them to notch out the upper corners on it (vs glass) so this dividing wall can go all the way to the top - if not, you will have a wall/divider that will have a 1/2" to 3/4" gap at the top due to the plastic upper lip that runs around the tank and the snakes could likely cross-over into each other's tanks.

Also, be careful how you place under tank heat pads, as one heat pad might be somewhat close to the water bowl of the other snake and the same too with heat lamps if you use them, so perhaps place both on the outside walls on each half then. Just a thought.

Good luck.

I was wondering....but I use these, http://source-www.petco.com/assets/product_images/8/800443078440B.jpg..work fine and easy to find at a pet store. The others I have never seen.

I've tried these clips also, and didn't have much success with them. But the bottom part that inserts into the rim of the cage didn't seem to have anything to allow the top part to clip on to - it just kind of rests on it. Then when I test the strength of the clips, they just popped off.

Maybe I wasn't doing something right. Are you doing something different?

Idk what your problem might be but here are some pictures.

Take the flat piece and wedge it between the glass and edging of the tank.

Then bend the piece til it fits on tight.

I have had these things for like 5years now. They fit fine for me and I also still use a rock for the center of the screen on top...because I have a flip lid

Ah after rereading what you said...I see what you mean. Yes I did have that problem but if you can shove that piece in farther you can get it to clip and if not... try bending the bigger clip to make it fit. It is exactly like that on the other side of my lid..but it doesn't move because it is tight.
