A Rant.......

Sorry but I need to blow off some serious steam. I am going to nursing school and I like all college students had to fill out a finacial aid form and of course I was elligible for anything bc I am a certain age and they base it off my income, AND my parents income. So today I got a letter in regard to a scholarship I applied for a month ago. This was so you can describe your finacial situation. And the letter said sorry at this time you are inelligible due to your finacial situation recieved from the FASFA. But girls in my class who are 20 years old and barely graduated high school and have 3 kids got $4,000 from this. And 30 year olds who havent done anything in the past 12 years and just decided that McDonalds wasnt for them are getting $3500. But there is me who is on their honor roll, makes it to class everyday and has come just a couple years outta high school and I get NOTHING. I make $10.00per hr and have to drive 20 miles to school each day with gas at $4.09 and just paid my school book fee for ONE semester at $500 and had to get new brakes on my car for over $200....But I dont show finacial need?!?! what the heck! Its not state funding they are handing out its a scholarship! I just felt I should be eligible for it the same since its not from the goverment!

Get used to it. Canada Student Loans refused to give me any money for living expenses because of how much my dad made, but my dad wasn't helping me. So I ended up in deep with the banks just to finish school.

Although, a 20 year old woman with three kids sounds like someone who could really use financial aid, so what's with the animosity towards them?

If you live at home with your parents and don't have your own children then that's exactly the way the cookie crumbles . . . it hasn't changed from 20 years ago when i had to come up with my own money for college . . . actually I think I'm still paying some of those loans off. :shrugs:

Time to fill out those loan forms. They're not so bad since you don't have to start payments until after school. It took me about 6 years to pay mine off. I lived alone and worked two jobs during nursing school. That was the longest four years of my life. It's great that you can live with your parents. A lot of people don't have that option. Maybe there are other students near you that you can carpool with to save gas $? Or when you start clinicals maybe you can stay with a classmate since you have to be there so early in the mornings? Believe it or not, the time will pass quickly, and you'll have a rewarding career before you know it! Good luck!!

*edit*

Also, do a little research online. There are many different scholarships you can apply for. Was this the first one you tried? Thinking back, I was older than you are now, and I got very little scholarship funding, maybe because I'd been out of school for so long, not sure. Anyway, it IS frustrating, but don't give up. There might be others that you can apply for now or even during your schooling that will come up.

Do any of your local hospitals have tuition reimbursement programs, or programs where they put you through nursing school and you agree to work for them for X years? I'm glad the single mothers are getting financial aid. You practically can't get out of that situation without it.

I can understand your frustration. My niece lives with us, and is in her last year of her physical therapy program. She had a scholarship for her undergraduate studies, but that ended when she started graduate school. And graduate school (and books) is REALLY expensive!

Her parents make too much money for grants, but they don't support her financially at all. But that doesn't matter - rules are rules! Very frustrating! However, the hospital that she works for part time does have some grants for tuition, as Nanci mentioned. Nurses are still in high demand, even in this economy. Try to get a part time job at a hospital (ANY job) that provides a tuition reimbursement program for future nurses. And if you don't find one, some hospitals will pay part or all of your student loans if you agree to work for them for a certain amount of time after you graduate. So pick and choose your first job carefully, lol!

Good luck!

Actually, they don't care if you live with your parents or not...If you're under the age of 23, you are considered a dependent of your parents. I couldn't get any financial aid until I turned 23, got married or had kids even though I've owned my own home since the age of 20...Figure that one out. :shrugs:

Oh I have nothing against single mothers or people in finacial hardships more extreme than mine. But I dont feel that I should be denied a loan just because I lack that. They are also under 23 and they live at home and their parents make more than mine BUT they have kids and get the money which is fine. But me I am also under 23 and I live at home and my parents dont help me out at all which is fine because they cant but I get denied completly.

I understand I cant get goverment or state funded aid but why not a scholarship like this funded by the school?
I am doing tuition reimbursment but the price of GAS, books and traveling to the school and not being able to work much at all is hard on me and I think even $1,000 would be helpful to tackle these bills before my car gets taken by creditors lol

That is frustrating. Sorry you've got to go through it. Are you doing a BSN or AD? Oh and which hospital do you do your clinicals? My mom was in West Penn for six months and although the outcome wasn't good, I found it to be a very nice place.

Best of luck to you with school.

And 30 year olds who havent done anything in the past 12 years and just decided that McDonalds wasnt for them are getting $3500.

And we deserve it. I am also in Nursing school...and 30. And have not done anything in 12 years...although McDonalds is out. But hello...at our age we have more expences. Children, Morgages, Utilities, Groceries, and more. My suggestion to you is to think of that before growing bitter! :)

Not that the 20 year old with 3 kids doesn't need an education just as much as you do, but WTF 3 kids already??
I think there should just be a rule, if you can't feed them don't breed them! And definitely someone who is responsible enough to NOT have all these kids already is just as much deserving of the financial aid and IMO a brighter candidate for college. Sometimes I think the system just rewards people for the wrong stuff.
Sorry for the rant, there's just so many welfare moms where I live and it bugs me what with the world overpopulation which I have ranted about elsewhere.

The alternative is to ensure that young single mothers remain poor and uneducated, thus raising children who are likely to remain poor and uneducated. Frankly, if the choice is between an 18 - 20 year old with no children and an 18-20 year old with 3 children and no spouse, I'll take the one with children for the grant/scholarship every time. I was able to do it with no job during school, even though I got shortchanged by the federal government simply because the only person I had to worry about feeding was me.

Besides, your point of view is extremely misogynistic for the simple fact that women bear the brunt of the burden when it comes to unwanted pregnancies, especially teen pregnancies. But hey, so long as those sluts learn their lesson, right?

Its a choice to be educated or not.. Its not up to anyone or instution to provide a free ride to get you out of a bind.. I believe in a helping hand, not a hand out.. I am sorry, I have no sympathy for people who make poor decisions and want to be bailed out time and time again.. I hear people whine and cry all the time that its so hard to educated.. Well duh, education is not easy to come by and we must make a sacrifice to actually get ahead.. I can't believe I used to buy into that crap that my taxes should be used to support someone who continuely makes crappy decisions and choices.. I just say make them wards to the state/province/country/whatever and have them work for their part too.. Or is that just horribly wrong expecting people to be responsible for pulling their own damn weight?

Obviously I can't agree with the last poster, and my opinion is not intended to create an arguement, other than it just being my own personally formed, nearly middle aged opinion..

Ah wahhh.. My heart does not bleed for you.. The first job I had in the US I was making about $3.33 an hour, 7 days a week and 9 hr days.. Try supporting your unemployed spouse, kids, paying bills, rent and other essential things.. That was in 2003 when I tried for four years to gain employment.. Car repairs? Damn, I had to get really good at mechanics to keep the car(s) going.. Welcome to life, its unfair and it sucks, and well I am still up to my ears in debt because I had to feed the family using my CC for quite a long time..

Heres a cheery little song for you to keep your spirits up..

I should say however, all is never lost completely.. We can go forth and make the effort to change our lives .. http://youtube.com/watch?v=JJYTsuqfy_4

Your putting words in my mouth (or my post as the case may be). I wasn't talking about a free ride or a hand out. I was talking about how idiotic it is to hold it against a single mother than she gets a scholarship or grant because somehow, a single person with no dependents needs it more. That's not how this works. Those programs are in place to assist people who may not otherwise be able to afford school and paying for children should increase one's chance of qualifying, not lessen it.

Unless you agree that women should be punished for having sex.

I don't know why people post these disclaimers. I will engage anyone in a discussion - if you don't want to engage me back, don't post at all.

PS. What's with the double periods? That's kind of weird. :p

You missed my point.. We should never have to rely on anyone to take care of any of us.. I sure as heck never put words in your mouth at all.. I don't hold it against anyone to be lazy and pathetic, thats thier choice.. Why is it our responsibility to take care of someone elses mess?? I never encouraged anyone to go and copulate when they can't even afford to take care of them selves..

Then you rant the following nonsense..

Unless you agree that women should be punished for having sex.

Nope, not at all... I think people need to take personal responsibility for thier actions.. They made their beds, they can lay in it, and take care of their actions on thier own..

Because I know I will never agree with most of your drival, I am certain you feel the same way about my posts.. Heck, what can I say, you threw the bait out now.. Why can't I post an opinion without engaging you? *lol* Oh wait, I need to bow down to my superior.. *LOL* I don't bow to no one sunshine, dream on..

Whats with the double periods? I don't know.. Have done that for so many years and it has formed a habit.. I don't think it is weird at all.. I have no idea why my lack of grammer seems to intrest you.. Of course, anything to make you feel superior, of course this kind of makes it personal dig now, which I was trying to avoid..

Dale mentioned..

Obviously, this link is not intended to create an argument, it's just an opinion.

Are you refering to me Dale? Are you refering to me? Of all the rat poisoned people out there to toss that opinion up, you managed to nail it on the head.. Now I can't wait until John Wayne is resserected. I do think Dale you are owed a little User CP for your opinion.. *LOL* Amen Brother..

T&J, I'm not even sure what you're arguing anymore. Nobody is talking about making you support anyone. You DO know that scholarships are paid out all the time, right? Do you object to scholarships in general?

I mean, you quoted my post where I said a single mother should not be passed over for scholarships and you said you disagreed. So if you think single mothers should not be permitted scholarships because

"They made their beds, they can lay in it, and take care of their actions on thier own."

That's extremely sexist. Why aren't we passing over the child's father for scholarships, too? Why just the mothers? Why are women the only ones to pay the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy?

"Why can't I post an opinion without engaging you?"

You can, but don't expect me to respect your opinion, then.

"Because I know I will never agree with most of your drival"

Ad hominem doesn't become you and it's poor discourse to resort to it.

"Oh wait, I need to bow down to my superior.. *LOL* I don't bow to no one sunshine, dream on."

At no point have I attacked you, only your arguments, and frankly I find your sarcasm to be offensive. I am not your superior and I have never claimed I was. Please refer to my post about not putting words in my mouth.

"Of course, anything to make you feel superior, of course this kind of makes it personal dig now, which I was trying to avoid."

I just asked you about your double periods because I found it unusual. If you want to make this personal, by all means, but I have no intention of following suit.

*LOL*

What ever you say Dude.. What ever you say...
