Al Gore...living green...yeah right.

Perhaps that's why he chose CA instead of TN. He identifies better with people out here. ;)
That could be so, JP, and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm just a native southern boy, a little frightened of life on the fast track near a major BIG city like L.A. or New York. Just my own humble opinion.

I do not think Al Gore is intrinsically a bad person. Nor the idea of living in the shadow of L.A.
Despite a little sarcasm, let's not get carried away. My threads are for people to come together.

JP, where would be your ideal place to settle down and retire one day?

I would like to settle down and retire in a quiet countryside, lush green areas, like your state, FL, or somewhere similar. Preferably a blue state. It was always my dream to live far from big cities when I get old. To have a small farm with a few animals and to grow my own food.

That would not happen nowadays though. The 2 big cities you mentioned are the top of my list for places to live in the near future. You just forgot to mention San Francisco.

I like big cities, for now. ;)

I think San Francisco would be OK. Maybe not Dallas. I really really like Atlanta. The people there are very very nice. My mom has a house in Macon, Georgia. A very pretty, comfortable town.
I need to have at least one Best Buy and one Apple Store within 20-40 miles.

I hope by the time I go into seclusion in some countryside (wishful thinking there will be countrysides left), all transaction will be internet based. No need to have anything nearby. :D

As for Al Gore's villa, I am almost certain it sits on a very high cliff, just in case. LOL

Montecito isn't even in LA county..
Near Santa Barbara, a very beautiful area w/o the traffic
and smog of LA.
Come to SoCal and I'll show you places you'd love to be..
I have family in many areas of this country and though I like many of them,
I still come back to SoCal.

And yes Eric I burn wood in my fireplace and love it.. lol
Cheaper than using the gas heat too..

Thanks, Gene. I have never been further west than Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
I have been told by many that the San Diego area is very pretty, too. Mountains on one side, seashore on the other.

I would like to go too Gene! An eco-tour (or perhaps a herping tour) of SoCal is something I never did.

I worked in Downtown San Diego until 6 months ago..
LOVE that area!
As for herping areas.. I live 15min from WhiteWater..
A big variety to be found out there..
Im 40 min from Big Bear for the mountain area stuff..

I'm at 2640 ft so a cool and clear area too.

I won't be leaving FL anytime soon, born and raised here. There's no where else I'd rather be, I'll keep a sounds mind as long as I can still hunt, fish, and run my airboat when and where I want.

Macon is cool, I've taken a road trip up through there before- just some strange folk out along those parts and lots of houses on stilts (which I never could really figure out).
Atlanta has WAY too much traffic, not to mention that it has the worst, most disorganized Air Port I have ever had the luck of going through. I think Atlanta has way too much bustle for my own taste to live near. Although the Appalachian Mountains are OMG BEAUTIFUL and I've often thought about investing in a small cabin there.
I also concur about San Diego. I go to San Diego every chance I can get here at work (we travel there often)- the weather is amazing, the people are amazing and the food is REALLY amazing. You can get sushi to go there at Sensei's Sushi, which, believe it or not is some of the best sushi I've ever had.

This is a place just south of my home called The Valley of Fire. If you look close in the center of the picture you can see a little white spot. That is my camper. If you could see two white spots in this picture, it would be way too big of a city for me.

Yeah Montecito is nothing like LA, more like Ojai but on the coast. Al Gore is probably the least wealthy guy living there though, so I'll never call it home, lol.

Yep

The West IS the Best !!!!!
You think with the money he has he would just throw it away,or make good investments on whatever he buys? You cant beat the weather here in California. If I was rich right now, I would buy as many California propertys that I could!
All... the Big citys arent pretty, thing is thats just one small area. The reason there are earthquakes in California is because people get to spoiled living here and get very layed back, the earthquakes shake them up a bit to get them back on there toes.......:)
I have lived from Florida to California and inbetween,so far Cali is THE place to be......;)

LOL. Stephen, I am not at all a stalker, but I have google mapped your area and it seems very nice. Near a lake, and what looks to be woods and mountains. Ideal.

Yep

Two blocks away from 2 lakes,Castaic known for catching the world record Large Mouth Bass!
Although we dont fish it much,we ocean fish alot, also fish the High Sierras, where my biggest trout was 9 pounds 77 ounces. My biggest large mouth was a little over 10 pounds.
We fish mostly for ocean fish like Tuna, they are saying this is the year for alot of Albacore, which has me pretty excited. Fresh Tuna sandwichs for months............:)

Oh God, fresh Tuna is to die for! I've only been fishing for Tuna (yellow fin) once, down in Hawaii... it was a blast and the tuna was just amazing while fresh.. Boy are you lucky Stephen.
