All Cornsnakes are NOT created equal :)

I heard they can get quite lenghty, seven to eight feet?

I can vouch for that. About 30 years ago (or so) three of us caught an 8' black rat along the Susquehanna river in southern York County, PA. He was actually fairly gentle even throughout the capture process. Still, it DID take three of us to subdue it and get it out of the rock wall, actually an old canal lock.
I traded it to a pet shop for a baby boa since I was the only one of the three allowed to keep snakes.

Likewise

Snake stories are often strecthed, like fishing stories, but I caught a HUGE black rat as a kid that was well over seven feet if it was an inch. All my books and field guides maxed them out at over a foot shorter. I released it after a year, and later saw another sunning on my road that was even larger. Either that or this one had gained quite a bit of girth. Tried to catch it, but it said "no." To this day I wish I could've recorded that animal's size and weight and had it verified somehow.

yeah, those large black rat snakes are def abundant at my dad's house.

what part of NC are you from? we could be catching snakes in the same area.

The ones mentioned

were in Shelby, NC. I'm in the Asheville area now, and have run across a few big ones here as well.

...

horridus, I posted a "wanted" ad about 1 year ago looking for ugly cornsnakes. The picture of that cornsnake is EXACTLY what I am looking for. Of couse, I don't really think it's ugly, but it's definately different.
The offer still stands. If anybody has an adult corsnake that is real dark like that I want it and I will pay for it. I don't care what part of the range it comes from as I have seen them look like that in southern Maryland too. If you prefer to trade something I have WC South Carolina cornsnakes every now and then. I also might have some F1 Okeetee locality cornsnakes hatchlings this year.
Let me know.

Good luck with that.

I hope you find some you like. If you ever breed any that look like this one, get the word out-I'd love one like it.

WOW. That is far from ugly. I'd say fascinating beautiful. I always had a fable for the grey and red ones.

WoW WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

What a beauty! Ive always prefered darker corns, I often feel that snows, amels and butters are a little artificial looking for my tastes. I love her dark grey rear end, and the stripes on her lips are incredible. Id buy her in a heartbeat!

unique

Jeez I'd like a snake like that! She's so unique looking. I wonder what you'd have to do to breed a snake like that? But then again part of her beauty may be that she is so unusual. I love the metallic greys blended with the black and red... can't beat mother nature.:p

That snake has a look about it that says "hey buddy, I have to *work* for a living"

it definately has a lot of character, lol. I do love that snake as well though, shame that we don't find 'em in teh wild around here.

Heres a photo of a corn I found recently road cruising, it reminded me of this photo, Shes dark on the lower part of her body and light up top with the "fangs" to, I found it interesting as most of the corns here a lighter. I wish she was as dark as the one posted but oh well shes close enough for me. LOL
