Another Clutch Finally...

Mrs InsaneOne

I See Snakes...
Seems like we've done nothing but wait, wait, and wait some more for our girls to drop their eggs. At least the waiting is over for one more girl now... lol

Leucite dropped 6 big and beautiful eggs this morning for us - squeezing them in before the end of the month! =)

That's 6 clutches down and another 8 to go...

Seems that the Girl was too small for breeding...

Maybe, 300g first time breeder, what could we really expect? Your opinion has been noted, and appropiately filed...

We are very careful when we breed our girls, to insure that they are mature and healthy enough to handle both the gestation and laying process. We also make sure that they have good muscle tone (as best we can) and are not just carrying fat.

Not every corn snake lays double digits for a first time clutch. There is variation in the numbers, with an increase in the total number rising each year (typically, but not always.) There is also a possibility that she dropped a slug or during the week before she laid that I might have missed when cleaning out her cage and that would account for the low number of eggs.

The other thing to take into consideration is the fact that these eggs are fairly large - much bigger than I expected truth be told. Than again, maybe the male has a low sperm count and the unfertilized eggs were reabsorbed. Or she could even have another egg or two sitting up higher that she hasn't laid just yet - she'll be monitored over the next several days and still has her lay box just in case.

Maybe I'm reading an accusation in your post that you hadn't intended, but I found it extremely offensive that you automatically jumped to the conclusion that she was too small and inferred that we were irresponsible breeders.

I don't know if that is what you intended, but that's the way it came off.

The female above had absolutely no problems laying her clutch, all were dropped within about a 5 - 6 hour period AND she's looking fairly good if a bit skinnier that she was prior to laying. She also ate a small meal for us earlier tonight without any hesitation, and is far from being lethargic. In fact, she tried to bite me when I extracted her eggs from the lay box - I seriously doubt that she'd be that spirited if she'd been breed far too small or too young.

That said and done, I'm looking forward to seeing these eggs hatch, as both mom and dad are beautiful snakes with great feeding responses and easy going personalities. (except when they are hungry or annoyed because you're stealing eggs...)

Wow! That girl has amazing colour and pattern! I had to go to your website to see if I could figure out who she is, but I couldn't?!?

The work on the website is all fantastic by the way, first time I'd seen it in ages. Certainly haven't seen many of those updates you have done!

Well, let me know on exactly what is expected from this clutch ok? :)

Rebecca

Thanks Rebecca! The female here is Leucite, she's an ultramel that we purchased a few years ago that was sold to us as a T+ albino. There's been some dispute as to whether she (and her siblings) are really ultramels, but we hope to confirm it one way or another with the 3 breedings we did this year.

Leucite was paired with our Amel Stripe boy, Sediment. Expected offspring should be Ultramels and Amels all het for stripe. There's a chance we might get some Anerys and Ultramel Anerys in there as well if both the male and female are het for Anery.

I think she is gorgious and looking quite well for just laying eggs. I would be Very offended by what sunproject said as well... reads like a slap in the face. Maybe they dont know that females (not all but most) do tend to look abit thin after laying?? The size of those eggs.... my goodness :) you should get some 12g or more babies out of those. Congrats and look forward to seeing what babies you get :)

Those are some big, beautiful eggs! And I think Leucite looks great- not all skinny and deflated like so many do...

Not sure how any one could tell whether that gal was too small or not, unless it was based on just the size of the eggs. Never occured to me that she might be small, but just that those are some dang big eggs! Looking forward to seeing what hatch out of them. Some monster size hatchlings I'm guessing!

Congrads!

She's gorgeous! Are you still breeding this late? Is it even late? LOL All of these pics make me wish I had bred my pair this year. :bang:

Our breedings were completed about a month ago... Not going to do any more breeding..However that does not stop a second potential clutch..

Beautiful clutch and gorgeous snake!

I had 2 females lay this year both of similar weight, one of which laid 17 eggs, the other laid 7 eggs and the one who laid 7 is a year older, it was also their first time breeding. Some just lay smaller clutches, while others lay bigger clutches, so I don't think you can judge if a female is too small/too big, just by the number of eggs in a clutch.

I think your girl looks great, especially for just laying eggs, congrats!

Best wishes,

Thank you for the comments everyone, and for understanding the reason for my rant.

I guess I'd been gone too long and forgot that there are snipers out there who enjoy sneaking in with one post to make nasty comments and than dart out again just to see how angry or riles up they can get a body... I'll try to keep clam and composed next time. lol...

Leucite is still doing great, she's been out of her lay box twice today for a drink of water before going back in, she's much more active than some of my older snakes that have clutched for me in previous years. Both of her sisters are looking close to laying as well, they are nervously cruising their cages before hiding in their lay boxes for long stretches.
