Cute new baby, I think you can go ahead and leave the light on the top, I have a similar one for my Kingsnake and it doesn't get warm at all. However, he might be tempted to come out more when the light is off, just so you know.
 
Thanks so much for all the advice! I've reduced the amount of bedding and place a small fake ivy along the back of the tank. He/she is buried in the bedding with no intentions of leaving that comfort zone! I'll leave it be until next weekend, he'll be nice and hungry by then.
