Hi I ordered my corn last night and he will be arriving on Wed. I already have a 15qt sterilite set up(2 rows of holes drilled through each side). I have aspen bedding but have heard of newspaper also used for babys. I also have the following: water dish, 2 hides(cold&warm), half log, thermometer w/ probe, hydrometer, mini UTH, with lowes dimmer to regulate, and I also have a bag of the moss stuff for a humid hide during shedding. The only thing I can think of that I have left would be some tongs for feeding. I have been doing tons of reading
If anyone knows of anything I might have left out or some tips for when he arrives just let me know thanks.

Binder clips for the tub! They're crafty little fellows, and can escape rather easily. Even if he's too small to pop the lid off right now, or at least open it enough to get out, in the near future, the binder clips will come in handy!

thanks alot i bought clips for my 20 gallon but for now its gonna be in a sterilite tub so i might try staples for some binder clips. If i've read right, no handling in first week of gettin him, no handling for 48hrs after feeding, no handling or feeding while eyes are blue.... I gotta be missing something lol

yea lol i usually try to do tons of research before I dive into something. I will definately post pics. He's a male Lava cornsnake. Choosing was sooo difficult, so many amazing looking snakes lol

I would like to shake your hand... way to do your reaserch! :dancer: you rock!

What are the temps at the warm and cool ends? Always a good idea to set it up and monitor temps for a few days before adding the snake.

i havent turned on the uth yet, but i'll probably connect it on monday and use the dimmer i got from lowes to shoot for an 85ish warm side

Need a reg. thermometer for the cool end the kind you stick to the side. You can use the one with the probe for the warm end. Try using another type of hide half logs are open on both end and dont provide enough security. Good luck O ya you should have bought the 5 pk. of 15qt. tubs LOL.

there were so many nice lookin snakes I was temped to buy more but I figure with this being my first snake I'll get some experience then move up in the numbers. And as far as hides go I made a couple of those toilet paper tube hides with the sock around them that I saw on here so hopefully that will provide some security. If not then i'll just take a container, turn it upside down and cut a hole in so the snake can hide. thanks for the input this forum has been a great source of info

That should work great. Good job on doing the research you will do just fine. You know well all be asking for pics after she settles in.

Personlly, I wouldn't bother. That type of thermometer is so inaccurate you're better off just checking the cool end regularly with a better one.

The toilet tube hide is great it works amazingly well with my two. You can also make your own shelters out of wood as long as it has been sanded down so it cant get splinters.

If you want to use wood from outside, make sure it's not resinous soft wood - pine, cedar etc. These are said to be toxic to reptiles. Fruit wood or hard wood is good if someone is clearing their garden.

Apart from that, your biggest concern is making sure that it's free of creepy-crawlies. Bake small branches in the oven or soak larger bits in a bucket, sink or bath, in a dilute bleach solution (or reptile-safe disinfectant), then rinse well and leave to dry for several days before use.

The great thing about toilet roll tubes is that the small snakes squish themselves in and feel secure, and they are disposable when they get pooped on! I like bunches of bad-taste flowers or greenery too, for the snakes to hide in and shed through. (Again I buy cheap ones rather than the reptile shop ones, that way I throw them away after a few times of washing them, if they get stained)

set up my tub and heat mat and with alot of tinkering got the temp to about 87.1 right now, but i'm going to get it down a bit more to the 82-85F range. I was suprised last night to see the UTH with the dimmer switched turned all the way up reach 121F! Good thing I started early to get the right temp. For dimmer I'm using a lowes dim switch. My corn comes tomorrow morning so I think i'm all set. The humidity says right about 40% right now. Is that good or should I mist about 2 times a day to try for 45-50%? and again thanks for any answers of replies

I think the humidity is fine. Just push it around shedding time. My humidity hardly gets over 50% normally for my BCI. But at shed time I push it up and its doing fine.
