average prices of corn snakes at petco?

I've heard other people tell me that corns in other petcos might cost different (not different morphs mind you) Because I've heard other people say different prices.
However last I looked they are on sale from 39.99 to 29.99
The tank if you get one with a locking lid already built in is around 45, don't buy the heating unit from there it's a rip off.

well i've spent close to $500 already, and i work at a pet store so i get everything at cost. which is roughly 50%... it is NOT a cheap hobby!

i bought a 50 gallon front opening vivarium, a waterfall, plants, water dish, hides, aspen snake bedding, kathy and bill love's "a comprehensive guide to corn snakes," a reptivine, feeding tub, gram scale, thermometer & hygrometer, UTH, heat lamp + bulb... etc. the only thing i haven't gotten yet is the thermostat!

Well if you buy everything from the pet store then yeah it's not cheep.
Waterdishes plants etc can be found for much cheaper lol.

very true indeed! i just bought em there cause i work there... it's a convenience thing! i'm pretty much ready to tell my boss to stop writing me a paycheck though... since i just give it all back anyways! :crazy02:

I got my lil' buddy from Petco, but that is because I work there. Not only did I get the sale price plus a discount off that, I got to spend a lot of time with all the babies before making a decision and I fell head over heels for my Kaa. If I didn't work there, I would have gotten one from a rescue most likely.

I got both of mine from petco.39.99 and the second fro 29.99 on sale.both are fine eating good and growing fast had them since aug 07.:dancer::spinner:

In SoCal Petco's have them for as low as $29.95 on sale up
to $79.95, because the store managers are idiots. As Jenn
said there are many breeders here in SoCal as well as specialty
"Reptile Stores" that have better animals for fair prices and
known backgrounds. My local Shop has tanks "Cheaper" than Petco,
but Petco is good for hides, water bowls, plants etc...
I USED to work at Petco, but left over reptile care in our store.

It might be worth your while to get in touch with your local herp club. I got my normal for free (well, with donation to the reptile rescue) from one really awesome member who breeds. My other corn was a re-home from a different member, he was a 2 year old amel and cost me $20.

As for equipment, second hand is AWESOME. I hear of people getting great deals on aquariums at thrift stores, I got two of mine off of craigslist. Much cheaper than they would have been new. And if you're lucky, you'll find a fish keeper who wants to get rid of his 'useless' tank that won't hold water any more.

I did have to buy the lids and heaters at the reptile store, all in all I think each set up came to about $100.

Yeah second hand is freaking awesome.
I've got a 55 gallon oak trim tank that costs $130 at petco.

I got it off of craigslist for $35.

yeah, at work a lot of people come in asking us it we want old aquariums that they are too lazy to re-seal. SURE we'll take em! sometimes we use them to keep the animals in, and sometimes we'll use them to set up a "kit" for certain pets. it doesn't cost us anymore to throw in the bigger enclosure since we often get them for free, but it's nice to walk into a pet store and be able to pick up the entire kit AND the animal at the same time, and be comforted in the fact that you'll never have to get a bigger tank!

Another down side to Petco is that they don't know the sex of the snakes. A friend of mine got one from there and it ended up having mites. I almost purchased one, but eventually decided to order from Kathy Love...SO glad I did, she has been a tremendous source of info and help since we got Monty. Good luck!

What to do...what to do...

Petco vs Kathy Love

Sorry but its a wicked no-brainer for me!
Kathy Love wins EVERY TIME!
(I have 2 of her snakes, and they are wonderful)

I think I would have ordered one of Kathy Love's Snakes if I hadn't fallen in love with Kaa before I knew about her. He's a good snake though, I love him, he's awesome. But with Petco, like all pet stores , it's not the best place to buy an animal. They usually don't know as much as the managers make it out like they do, and the animals are not going to be top quality. There is also a lot less choice in morphs and what not. The animals are also going to be very stressed because of all the shipping they have to go through. At my store, they clean the snakes the day after they are fed, which involves repeated handling, loud noises around them and constant movemnt, and a rearranged habitat when they are finally returned. So, not the best care either. I work there, and even I would get from a breeder next time.
