Baby Savannah Monitor PlEASE HELP!

The Savannah is on calci-sand right now, but it is good Pine Shavings? the ambient temperature is 91-93, and the basking spot have a heating pad right now, and I dont know the exactly Temperature, until i get a good Heating Light, and he still always sleeping, is that normal? he poop today, and I give him a cricket and he get to sleep....

Please... For the sake of your pet, either join a monitor forum/sub-forum, buy a book and do your research. Either that or give him to someone who can take better care of him. But as you said, they're illegal in PR so I doubt that's possible.

Reptiles DIE on Calci-Sand due to impaction, and pine shavings contain phenols that are deadly to reptiles in an enclosed space, especially if the bark is used. Put him on newspaper/paper towels or tile, it's much safer, cheaper and easier to clean. I know it doesn't look as nice, but I think the health of your pet is more important.

Get a thermometer, get a thermostat, get a bigger tank. Use the heat pad on one end connected to a thermostat to be the cool side, and get a heat lamp and a dimming thermostat for an elevated basking position of 130F. If you can't afford these things, then you shouldn't have got the pet in the first place.

READ, READ, READ. Work out a good feeding regime for your monitor, and make sure he has everything he needs.

Here's another good caresheet. Read it, and do what it says (compare to other caresheets)

First of all, you said you've had the animal for two days? It's probably stressed - also, i would not worry about him or her sleeping all of the time, from what i've read and researched they are somewhat lazy animals and only "active" during a feeding. You're monitor will lounge throughout the day - but he will still get up to explore his viv. leave him alone for awhile and if you're scared to feed on the bedding i would suggest removing it and putting newspaper or paper towels like every one else has said. that way, you could just drop a couple crickets into his cage. sorry if this doesn't make much sense, im still quite incoherent from the weekend. i suppose i should read through this thread.

Not only is he stressed he is also probably newly hatched or the most a couple of weeks old.

All good suggests here but the best one is to read. You have the internet, do a search and you'll get thousands of links.

Word of advice: If your savannah monitor lives to adulthood you might not be able to hide him. As he is illegal, he'll probably be conficated. He'll get big.

And, please, please, DO NOT release him into the wild if you find you can not take care of him. They are invasive and will be detremential to your island. That is why they are illegal.

Hi,now he is eat, :D he eat 3 crickets yesterday, he still sleeping right now, but he looks very active when he is eating or random moments, I will remove the calci-sand tommorow, I will start bedding with towels, but Forest Bed is good?? just asking

A thank you would be nice...

No, I'd keep the towels, or go with floor tiling. Up to you though, just be careful at feeding time. Maybe have the forest bedding and put a 'feeding tile' somewhere, to prevent ingestion of the substrate. Just remember, lizards go to toilet quite frequently, and replacing the forest floor bedding could get expensive.

Oh and remember, you can't just feed him crickets. You must give him rodents too, and for his age and size, it should be roughly four pinkie (baby) to fuzzy sized mice a week. And with the crickets, make sure you routinely dust with a vitamin supplement and calcium supplement. Make sure it's one made specifically for reptiles.

I wouldn't say pinkies - if the sav is only 5 or 6 inches, i would stick to a strick diet of crickets, meal worms and so on. Wait a while before you offer him his first pink, and certainly at his size I wouldn't feed him four. Again, remember to dust your insects with some sort of reptile calcium - just like snake dave recommended.

If you wish to feed him pinks - then go for it, but i read at that age they should be on a strict diet of insects only until they are a bit bigger. So if you can find a small pinky that's great, offer him one of those and a couple of crickets and he should be find for the day.

As for bedding, i'm using reptibark at the moment, but another good bedding would be eco earth coconut fiber - you can even use aspen if you wish. Sav's also love to bathe in their water dish so be sure to have a large water bowl as savannah monitors USUALLY defecate in their water dish, so be sure to change it daily. :)

Whoops, thanks for making me realise my mistake. I meant to put four pinkies A WEEK, not just four pinkies, lol. I read that on the caresheet I linked. It's getting late now, and my fingers and brain are tired :grin01:
