bad mouse bite.

Not having the time to search the forums is not a matter of time, it is a question of having the energy to exercise my brain. See it takes effort to research an answer. If you will just tell me what I want to hear, I won’t have to put forth that effort and my brain can stay in its dormant state.

Going to the vet may be common sense to you but I’ve got plans for this weekend. It would be a long drive and take a lot of time to go to the vet. What I am really looking for is for someone to just tell me I don’t need to go to the vet and then I can feel OK about myself when I spend the weekend playing X Box.

I’m angry with everyone for suggesting I feed f/t because I already know that and I don’t want to. It’s way cool to watch my snake clobber the mouse and the mouse struggles, gasps for breath, and all that stuff. My friends like to watch and we enjoy it. So my snake looses an eye every seven years. He’s like got two you know.

Uh, hey original poster. I only read through the first page of this thread before becoming rather pissed off. I want to appologize for the obnoxious response of this forum... people unfortunately are too wrapped up in their personal opinions to realize that you only wanted help with your snake and his medical needs, not with how to run your life. You are clearly informed as to the risks and benefits of feeding live or f/t, and have made your personal decision that at least I respect.

If everyone else feeds f/t, good for them. No need to push this frozen-mouse-feeding religion on everyone.

For the record, I feed f/t, but only because it is what available to me. There are a number of benefits to feeding both life and f/t and I have in the past practiced both safely.

Looks like the other replies have covered how to take care of your baby-- I'd definitely switch the substrate and keep him heated. Good luck with him! I hope your baby is okay.) Keep us updated on the vet visit.

Listen WE all do know my story and I just want to help this person OP I just bought 100 mice for 35$

What first come to mind is what are the pro's of feeding live. And dose it out weight feeding f/t.

And keep in mind that the snake wouldn't need a vet visit if it would of been fed f/t.

So far with feeding live theory.
Feeding live as cost the snake and eye.
Time and gas going to the vet
and the vet bill.

Now....the pros.
Keeps it alive. Snake only eats live
I can become famous on youdopetube.com

I don't see any need for YOU to apologize for other members on this forum. From what I see every one stated pretty much the same answer, TAKE IT TO A VET. I also don't see where they are just "wrapped up in their opinions". They are stating facts. Most breeders and experienced keepers use f/t for a reason, the safety of their animals. There are the cases such as Metal_luke666 pointed out that some snakes are just picky. So feeding live is fine if the mouse can pose no harm to the snake, such as being stunned. There are no benefit from feeding live. The mouse is the same dead or alive and the snake doesn't need live to keep it's natural instincts. It all comes out the same in the end.

Most people here are very passionate about their animals and when an incident like this occurs, it's upsetting to them because it is 100% preventable.

Hello Animal gal and all....
Animal gal, you asked for advice for your snake, and it was given. Part of whats involved in any accident or injury to a pet is taking steps to insure such can NOT happen again. You are incredibly lucky that you know exactly what happened to Smeagol; you can therefore take steps to see that he is not injured again in the same manner.

I agree that his injury takes priority, and I agree with ALL who have said "take the snake to a vet". Snakes can get infections easily, and by the time its noticed it may be too late for the snake. In addition, any injury to the eye has to be accorded VERY high priority. Keeping Smeagol on newspaper is also a good idea so wood chips of any kind dont irritate or worsen the bite injury.

Now, I will join the many who said "feed pre killed mice". It only takes once, as you now know, for there to be devastating consequences. The fact hes been OK for seven years doesnt mean the next live mice you feed him wont channel Rambo and be incredibly destructive.

Frozen thawed mice are also FAR cheaper...I get about 100 for about 40$. I get them at reptile expos.

Good luck with your snake. If he is a corn snake, they can easily be transitioned, for the most part, to eat pre killed. It is also said that snakes who eat pre killed mice have gentler dispositions.

Sincerely,
Susan

Just wanted to add to this comment and say that nutrition wise there is no difference at all.
Its still a mouse at the end of the day, regardless of wether its a live or dead one, and the snake will happily eat either (Unless its a picky one like my royal python.)
When the snake actually begins to swallow the mouse, its dead anyway.
Its not like because its live its a 'fresh meal'.

I would like to say if you can possibly move you snakes to F/T try it. It safer.
I have tried for going on a year, to no prevail. So I have given up.

Hi Metal Luke666,

I dont know if this is lore or legitamate, but I have heard feeding frozen thawed mice is BETTER for a snake nutritionally because the freezing and thawing destroys some or part of cell membranes, releasing nutrients thus allowing more to be used by the snake. I dont see it as the snake digests the whole mouse, but, it could be true.

Sincerely,
Susan

Also kills any parasites the mouse could be carrying.
