Bill would give president emergency control of Internet....

...I don't feel like this is some government attempt to fence us all in for the final slaughter...

No, I certainly don't feel this is the final slaughter. It is just one of the many small (or not so small) steps that need to be taken to get a population used to the ideas presented in 1984 - little by little, step by step.

I would expect to hear this sort of thing in China. But since the passing of The Patriot Act, and banking laws like Know Your Customer (and report them to the gov. if they cash too many money orders or transfer too much money without filling out lots of forms, etc), I guess I am not surprised to see this proposal. Neither the Right or the Left have an exclusive on expanding government intrusion into our lives. If it is done slowly enough, the kids now will not know it was ever any different, and will be easy pickings when more intrusion is implemented in future years. You may TOTALLY LOVE AND TRUST the administration that passes this sort of thing today, but they will be gone in 4 or 8 years - will you trust the next administration as much?

The only faint hope is that there are so many international companies, and the Internet is so decentralized, that it is almost impossible to control - just ask the rulers in China. And with more and more international satellites, it will probably be easier to slip the grip of the .gov as technology improves - I hope. To paraphrase Princess Leia, the more they tighten their grip, the more people will slip out of it (sorry - my quote button is broken on my keyboard!). Of course, children raised with such restrictions may not feel the need to escape, until the noose is too tight to escape.

I don't like any of the government expansion of power and intrusion programs, no matter who proposes them. If I had children, I would be VERY CONCERNED for their future.

I really did not have time earlier, except to start the thread and run to work, but I have a good memory,...and don't want to be accused of not seeing the big picture.
I remember several months ago China and/or North Korea being accused of attempting, and possibly (on a very small scale) succeeding in shutting down certain metropolitan area electricity and water grids. I remember it in particular, because on or around that date, Carol H. (LowBelly Reptiles) had an internet/electrical (coincidental...?) interruption in the area where she lived.

http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/07/export/

Now. If somewhere there exists (and I don't believe there presently does that can,...but probably terrorist cells studying how-to) "soviet/russian", Chinese, North Korean, or Iranian computer-whizzes studying how to cripple a society like the US or UK by taking out major chunks of electricity or water grids, which over time would erode public morale and 'infrastructure'....then I support a commission (or sub-department) of counterpart US/UK computer-whizzes somewhere, preferably in secret, working to make the 'others' perpetually and forever unsuccessful.

What I am saying is, having a commission of anti-internet espionage/terrorism counter-experts would be Step One.
"Step One" would NOT be having one man/messiah/father figure living in the White House, with 'some' computer knowledge, and a basement bunker control room with an array of buttons with the power to sectionally disable national internet communications.

OK I want to know who kidnapped Nova_C and hacked into his account!!! Nova_C siding with the "more freedom less gov control" side of a debate. Whomever you are free Nova_C!!! :grin01:

I'm betting that Ricky87 and his alter ego will be first in line for the microchip/bar code tattoo/whatever Big Brother decides to use when the time comes.

Call me whatever, but I shall refrain from calling you the most appropriate name you deserve.
Names I deserve?. Go right ahead; name calling is all you do when you disagree. Pretty immature of you, especially for someone who's a moderator, but I've seen it before so it doesn't surprise me. As for "alter ego", I just disagree so don't even begin with that garbage. Call me the "anti-christ", whatever. Your not exactly that pleasant of a human being, so I don't really care what you think!!.

shhh...cs.com is slowly warping his mind:grin01:

But...but...but Susan!!
Don't you know that Bammers loves us and only wants what's best for us?
This is how a lot of you act over a disagreement. It looks so ugly, and I know for a fact people don't post for that reason alone. Shame on you, and I'm so glad other forums I'm in don't do stuff like this!!.

I don't know what it is.
But I decided a week or two ago....that I was going to like Nova_C, and be his/her friend....whether he/she liked it or not....if it killed both of us...!!!!

At least she doesn't lie as it suits her discussion(s) like you and your """brother""". Lying is a greater evil than name calling as far as I'm concerned.

Have a good day.

I would like to think we are friends. I like Eric a whole lot, and respect him a bunch. He doesn't cross the line, and is a very encouraging person. I'm sure he disagrees with me sometimes, but I'd guess he likes me well enough. Surprise as it may be to you, I actually do a great job making friends. Just not with people who are as condescending as some folks here; don't care much for them to be honest!.

Your hung up on everything I say and are frankly one of the most immature people I've come across. Probably, because you know you can't get the best of me and that upsets you. I just stated my views so pick away; It just makes you look foolish!.

Ricky, you seem to think that Bammers can do no wrong because he inspires you, or some fool thing like that.

Real thinking adults who are alot wiser than you are are seeing some seriously scary signs that this guy is really bad news. But because you like the way he speaks, you are foolishly willing to trust everything he and his administration have to say??

Maybe you should change your name to Bammer's Minion....

Take a deep breath Ricky. It was a joke.

You are right, Michael. Potentially controlling how the average American person thinks by controlling the information that they have access to IS nothing like giving the enforcement branch a little more leeway to investigate people (especially FOREIGN communications) that are believed to be terrorists. I mean, we can't have a couple hundred suspected terrorists monitored to save lives but it is OK stopping ALL OF AMERICA from reading what the current administration-in-power doesn't want them reading. You are right. They are nothing alike at all. I just think your idea of scale is upside down on its head!

I HATED the idea of the patriot act (and it was heavily supported by democrats when passed!) - I still do. However, your idea that this new bill is LESS intrusive into civil rights just makes no sense in the real world where the rest of us are forced to live. B.O. just plain stinks. Don't make me smell it and tell me it's a rose.
Again, I can't rep you because I've need to spread it around!!! I was trying to come up with a way to say this, but went off on tangent after tangent... You, however, were successful. Kudos to you.

Kathy, I DO have children and I'm raising other people's children. This administration has me concerned for all of their futures. I'm just afraid that one day, my freedom to teach them my values will be taken away as well... and I DON'T think that this is beyond the realm of possibility.

I'm not really a supporter of government control. I just have very little faith in humanity and don't believe for a second that there's enough 'goodwill' for charity work alone to support the poor and downtrodden. There's a careful balance to be preserved.

Thing is, I honestly and truly believe that I am more free as a Canadian than Americans are.

Anyway, I feel very strongly about government 'control' when it comes to the free exchange of ideas. In other words, I abhor censorship. The US has way more censorship than Canada, especially around ideas such as drugs or sex, and the notion that the government could restrict access to the internet on a large scale is one thing I would oppose no matter the reason.

I tell you... stuff like this is just scary. How people can NOT see it simply boggles my mind.

What's there to "not see"?. I don't feel like this is some government attempt to fence us all in for the final slaughter. Freedom is everywhere, and in America we're only too free. We're only being robbed of fictitious liberties, and we can still type or say anything we want. I don't see anyone boycotting CS.com, because we can't say everything we want to say. To me it just makes no sense. If people don't like Obama then everything he does is going to be labeled a conspiracy; how realistic is that?.

"SEE" what I mean?? If it weren't so tragic, it would be funny...

I do consider myself to be friends with Ricky and Michael. They have been very trusting, very deep, and very open in their communications with me, and I could never betray those gifts. Our 'life experiences' differ, therefore some of our politics differ.....but I recognize that, and choose not to engage. Except for the weekends, I don't have long sustained time at the computer. And on the weekends, I like recreation, not altercation.

Regarding religion and politics, one can only go so far (in conversation). One can state what one believes in, and one can verbally accept what others believe in. Much beyond that and I start daydreaming, big time.
