black rat snake or black corn snake?

Yeah, It certainly is a possibility. It just looked to me like in the third photo the bulging seemed pretty symmetrical, but who knows.

Yes, the pesticides certainly aren't doing all the wildlife there any good,...that's for darn sure! What you desribed certainly sounds like a VERY diverse and prolific area. So sad about all the DOR's, but it's great that at least you are on the snake's side. :bowdown:

Not sure. It sure is weird. Rat snakes have relatively small head when compared to the rest of thier body..Too bad you didn`t catch it and examine it further..

Other than the Corn Snake we caught here at work three years ago and I
kept (my first Corn Snake), I haven't had he urge to catch any wild ones.
I have however, sat a lot of them off the road the past few years to keep
them from becoming a permanent part of the gravel and sand. Actually
sat a large turtle off to the side of that same road a few days ago as
well. I'm just a person fascinated by snakes (lifetime thing), but I wouldn't
know what I was examining even had I caught it. AND . . this bad boy
didn't want to have anything to do with me. That to is unusual, because
I've taken three or four Black Rats off that road the past couple of years,
and none of them (until this one) were Fistey or even attempted to stirke.

I'm guessing IF this was did have a defomity that caused loss of sight,
that would have been a reason to be more defensive.
 
I think he may have been just puffing his jaw out through hissing since as you say he was such a bad boy. Espcially since its so uniform on both sides...
