Brand New First Time Snake Owner

Thanks again! It looks like his eyes have cleared up some and I have been keeping an eye on the humidity in his viv. He spent the first couple days on the cool side, but has now taken up permanent residence in the warm hide. Whenever I change his water I get a very serious tail rattle. In a few days I will start to slowly handle him. My daughter was so mad that she can't hold him yet, but I explained that he has to get used to his surroundings and being held. She is also excited to see him shed. This has been such a great site for information. I can see how people get addicted to these babies :) I told my husband what everyone said about not being able to have just one and he rolled his eyes. I have a thing for animals. If I had it my way I'd have WAY more than I already do (a dog, two cats, and now the corn snake), but he reels me in. Again, thanks. I'll let you know how the first handling goes.
Oh, and tomorrow will be 5 days since he last fed which is how long we have had him. I plan on feeding him in a separate tank, is this ok since I'm not supposed to be handling him? Should I wait to feed him until Wednesday (that will be a week that he's been home) or just feed him in his viv??

I'd just wait a few more days and then feed him in his feeding tub. Absolutely no harm in a few extra days w/o food.

Howdy! We came up with a name. We have decided to call him Copper :)
He had his first shed in our care yesterday. I was home with my sick son all day and kept checking his viv since I knew it was going to happen soon. I left to pick my daughter up from school and when we got home my daughter checked his cage and was super excited! We measured it and it was 15.5 inches.
I also was able to handle him a little. He didn't shake his tail or try to strike which I took as a good sign. He didn't try to get away too much and he settled down pretty quick. He's such a sweet boy. I am going to start a picture progression thread so I can document his growth. The next time I feed him I will weigh him to see where he is at.
He ate too. Like last time I fed him, he is now resting in his cool hide. He doesn't seem to understand that he should be on the warm side to digest. We are still waiting for his first poop. I read that he might not do it until after he has digested his second mouse, does this sound right? He ate on 2/20 and again on 2/25. Any-who...I'll post his post-shed picture on the progression thread.

He is a very pretty baby. I second the fact that they are addictive. I have had my amel corn for about a year and a half now and will be getting another about march time. We have a local reptile shop and he has some beautiful babies. just waiting now for the clutches to start arriving then i will be preparing my next set up. Really excited, can't wait

LOL i know what you mean Geodude :)

I got my first corn my amel motley het caramel in December, and my second corn a normal anery and hypo ghost in January and i am waiting on a list with my breeder for a snow stripe from this years hatch. They are addicting. I have found that my female is definately harder to handle than my male. She use to rattle her tail when i tried getting her to holding her. I was worried but i have since learned that she is just using a tactic to scare me so i wont hold her.Sneaky but they are both coming along nicely now and i am comfortable with handling them both. You just have to be patient with your corn, and try not to show fear...i noticed if she startled me and i got nervous she would react way worse. My amel hes been a charmer since day one perfect corn to start with for me.
