Breeding Male Ages

I did a search and it didn't like my search words "breeding" "male" but did search on age that didn't give me what I was looking for.... so....

I've read quite a bit on females and starting ages, but how long can a male be expected to have viable sperm? My guy is 5 yrs old and I was thinking of buying a hatchling next year of similiar lines, but would mean that he would be 8 when it came time to do his thing. Is this too old or is it reasonable to think that he would be able to breed at that age?

I think a healthy snake can still breed into its teens & I would think this would be especially true of a male.

I think a five year old should be o.k. I would get a hatchling to start bringing him up as a replacement but that male should be fine.

Manog,

He would be eight when his mate would be ready. :) I'm not looking for a replacement as his first clutch would probably be my first experience at breeding. I want the same lines he came from (if I bred him) and there isn't anything currently available, so I'll have to wait until about May to pick something out for him.

If 8 is a little old for a virgin  then I won't pick up a mate for him. As she probably wouldn't do much for my goal of raising Charcoal Motleys.

I don't see whay he couldn't have his first breeding at 8. In the scheme of things it's not that old. Not even half their lifespan. I'd try it.

I agree with Meg. I don't think 8 should pose problem at all. Also, a big male will know what he needs to do in order to "get the job done". I've heard from a lot of people in here that younger males are often intimidated or not sure what to do. I bred my snakes for the first time this yr and the males were already 5 yrs old. worked out great for me. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks all for the advice. Sounds like I'll be contacting Kathy in May for one of those lovely Naples girls when they are hatched :)

Yet we made a comedy titled "the 40 year old virgin" :grin01:

i think that at 8 he should be fine, i mean he is really not that old
