Burying Under the Woodchips

No no, I have a bucket of DAMP substrate in my room (with no lid). I used cold water to expand it. Still no smell though (even when freshly made), but it's definitely similar. :)

I probably shouldn't have used hot water, that probably caused the smell, which is completely GONE now, 100% we'll find out in another month when I make up my second batch.

Hello everyone. I just got a hatchling Okeetee yesterday, and yesterday she spent all of her time in the hide on the warm side of the tank. Ever since early this morning she's been under the substrate on the cool side of the tank and hasn't moved an inch for hours. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Ari

Very.

Azruial: Curious. Why are you making a second batch? You know you can scoop, right? My brick is going to last me a LOOOOONG time, me thinks. And my snake poops a lot. I mean a LOT. I might have to change him name.

Some pics would be nice. Thanks for the info. I'll buy some of that stuff to try out when i can get my hands on it. Probably at the next reptile fair.

guitrage sounds just normal to me. Snakes should be able to find the right temp cradients in the viv. What are your temps?

There tends to be some 'fluids' with my snakies pooh. Not abnormally much but the woodchips don't absorb and it can get rather messy. Expecially with 2 snakes in the viv. It get's absorbed by the paper towel under the substrate wich is no fun to clean. I'd be glad to use a better substrate.

Right now it's 86 right under the lamp, this morning was in the mid 80's. As for the cool side I'm not sure. I'll put the probe on that side to check, though. Speaking of probes, is it ever a problem to the snake to have the wire and the probe sitting inside the tank?

I just looked and I can see her tail; she's in exactly the same spot. I guess she's just feeling insecure about her new environment. I'll give her a few days.

That's 30 degrees right? Well, thats the 'top' temperature. I would check the cold side. Best thing would be to always monitor both sides of the viv. Just one of those cheap 'tape on the glass' thingies work perfect.

I suggest to put a hide over there. Though if she wants to burrow it's fine to. Just fiddle with it untill you feel your snakes happy

It's been about 8 hours since she's moved. And I don't mean moved like from one part of the tank to the other, I mean like the position of her tail and everything! Ahhh! I don't want to disturb her and break the 3-4 day rule, but I'm mighty concerned. Should I check to make sure she's all right?

The temps are currently 81 on the hot side and 71 on the cool side. She has a hide on both sides of the tank.

Lol, I am being such a worrier. I went into the room to see if she had moved, and her head was sticking out of the shavings! Ten minutes later I came back and she was under the warm hide. She's OK, it's just me who needs to chill out. What a relief!

I was the same way with my new corn. He comes out at night and pretty much hides all day in the aspen during the day....I thought something was wrong too...:)

guitrage: LOL! I do the same damn thing (worrying for absolutely nothing). Confidence will come from knowledge, and sometimes it doesn't matter how many questions you ask, or how many answers you get, it just takes some time. I'm fairy "book smart" when it comes to my snake, but I still lack the confidence to believe... if that makes sense.

I know everything that's going to happen when he sheds, but the first time I see his eyes all clouded over you know there's going to be a thread here by me saying "I know this is perfectly normal... but OMG, is this normal? [/worrywort]", or something of the like. *sigh* Awful, innit? We suck. :D

Funny... I know some parents that were like that with their first kid, and now on to their third or forth and everything is "meh... they'll be fine". LOL!!!

LOL, me too. I had the same problem. Well... more like have!

I'm totally with you, Spirit.
It was incredible the first time I saw the eyes go blue. I knew it was coming, and I knew it was shed time, but WOW! it was really stunning to lift up a hide and see those BLUE BLUE eyes. I had expected milky white with a hint of blue, but man was I in for a surprise!

*Note to self: Blue eyes are much more shocking in person than pics I've seen online. Do not freak out and post whore with worry on the cornsnakes forum.

Got it. ;)

Duly noted. ;) I think he's getting close... he's been somewhat moody the last couple days. Oooohhhhh the excitement!

BACK ON TOPIC NOW! (I need to learn how to STAY on topic, dammit)

lol, we diverged from the original subject LONG ago, Sorry for pirating the thread, Wyldkat :shrugs: we'll shut up now!
