Can they actually talk?

ChiaraMom

a king's romance
this is a question inspired by the "talking to your snake" post. i read somewhere that snakes can actually make a clear clicking sound, resembling hitting stones, especially close to the breeding time. is this true? i mean, if they can't hear, why would they make sound to attract other snakes? or maybe the vibration is strong enough to be detected?

i know that kiki can sneeze. she did that the other day on my hand, i was looking away, but i heard this sneezing sound and felt her sudden twitch. i've watched closed since but she hasn't done it again. i raised the temp in the viv in case of RI. so obviously she CAN make a sound!

My 2.5 year old Okeetee will make small, almost hissing noises from time to time when I first take hold of him during handling sessions and he's attempting to get away. He'll do this and constict a little or thrust forward while I maintain a firm hold on him, until after a few minutes he calms down. The sounds he makes are more like a tiny puff of air, as if it is just the initial start of a hiss but nothing further. Kinda like : SSth, instead of the proverbial SSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Actually, I read an article just a couple of days ago about a study done showing that snakes can hear. I wish I could remember where I read it. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Yes, I think someone here posted a link to a study that suggests that although snakes don't have external earflaps, they can "hear" thru the bones, so there is a certain amount of sounds that they do hear. Hissing is sort of a communication. It's like a dog growling....means stay away! My amel tends to makes sneezy or clicking sounds when he's due to shed, but I'm not sure that's from his vocal apperatus (such as it is) or just from the skin.

"the auditory response of snakes in the range of 200 to 300 Hz is superior to that of cats... He notes that the maximum sensitivity occurs in the frequency range of noise made by movements of large animals, so detection of such sounds could function as a warning to snakes to be motionless, a common defensive action with animals."

so it seems that they CAN hear. but i remember 200 to 300 Hz is too low a range for human being to hear, right? i.e. baby talk to snakes doesn't make sense. ah well, i do so many senseless things everyday i may as well just continue do that...

Bumping this post, sorry. But I figure it's less wasteful than starting a new thread.

My new creamsicle (got it a week ago) has been making the oddest noises. I didn't know that snakes could make noise other than hissing or rattling, but this sounds like clicking - it sounds almost insect-like. At first, I thought it was my imagination, that I was going nuts (wouldn't surprise me one bit if that were the case).

Anyhow, it seems like a defensive sort of noise, since the snake was in striking pose when it was making those sounds.

My says ...If you build it ...they will come.

Bloodreds I hope. :grin01:

Yeah but anyway, I would thinks it normal.

Good Luck

Mine make clicking noises before they shed. Most likely you'll find yours is due.

I swear yesterday mine said 'this is the BBC News at 10 o clock' but it might have been a TV in another room. :grin01:

When mine was little and was in shed, he would make a short little "ssst" sound and twitch when I poked him. I think he was warning me to get away.

I've heard that a clicking sound could mean a respiratory infection, FYI.

My Black Rat Snake always makes clicking and "sneezing" noises when I hold him, literally every time. A lot of times he will look right at me and click once or twice, and I repeat what he does. Then he'll do it again but a different number of times, which I repeat to him. It seems we are at some sort of understanding. He is extremely tame for me as well and doesn't even flinch when being picked up, but he acts completely different towards my sister.
