Caution to Newbies

Hey I bought a $12 snake from a scumbag at a show and it died in two weeks. So yeah, good thread. :) Check references people!

I just saw this thread, otherwise I would have chimed in earlier. There is a vet at the Raleigh show. Dr. Dan Johnson of Avian and Exotics. As far as I know his staff or himself are responsible for walking around the tables. However, Weston and I have vended at this show for the past three years, twice a year, and I don't think that I have ever seen them. (looking at the tables) They actually have a table or more at the show and are based on the other side where the small animals and birds are. The best thing to do in a case like this is to either let the vet on staff know about the animals or tell the promotor or one of their staff, i.e. the person getting money at the door. I have a pretty good idea where that snake came from.....that person had a few animals I was interested in, but I no longer buy sub adult or adult animals from anyone, I've been burned too many times.....good thing I obstained.

I had promised myself that I was not going to bore you all with every little thing that Saffron does; BUT, her beautiful pretty tongue was flickering last night. :dancer:

And she was a monster when it came to giving her the medicine. Just like a kid, would not open her mouth and when she did, she chomped down on the syringe and would not let go. :dancer:

Hip, hip, horray.

Okay, I won't get my hopes up. She goes to the vet Tuesday and I promise I won't say anthing more about her until Wednesday.

I like hearing about her- otherwise I worry!

You got it. I plan on feeding her tonight. One of my female rats had babies two days ago so I'm giving her a nice warm rat pinkie tonight. She will love that.

I still don't know what's going on with those ticks/mites. I don't see any dead in the tank but I do see dark spots under her scales so I guess we'll have to hunt them down one by one. She was supposed to get a mite bath last night along with a mouth swabbing but I was tired, she was fiesty and my husband was sleeping so all she got was the medicine.

I am so happy that she seems to be better but I learned with Lizzy that things can change fast so I still have my fingers crossed that everything will be okay.

Mine are crossed too. It's always so cool when any small thing improves in an awful situation. Keep up the good work.

We feed her the other night, a nice warm rat pinkie, and we noticed another possible problem. Well, maybe a problem. She did not constrict it, just gobbled it up live.

Sunday I had her out in the afternoon letting her climb the dogwood tree and she did not coil and hold like I thought she should be we started physical therapy. Yep, snake physical therapy. I am going to be the world's first profession snake physical therapist. :dancer:

We have these webbed chairs that our snakes like go crawl through one opening and go out another and then in a different one, well, you get the idea. We spent about 30 minutes of her crawling, me sticking her head though a hole and her coming up through another. By the end of the session I noticed that she was starting to curl her tail around my finger which she did not do before. :)

So far, no response from Gila Productions.

I know. I told Kevin she eats like he does. He was the middle of five children and even at his age I have to remind him sometimes that no-one is going to steal his food, he can take his time and enjoy it.

Lol. Anyhow, keep up with the updates. :)

Snake physical therapist.....interesting career option! I love the lawn chair idea. I'll bet my snakes will have fun with those, too. And, as Nanci said, I wouldn't worry about her not constricting a pinky. She's convalescing, and saving energy. Having convalesced from major surgery myself, I totally get that!

Glad to hear about Saffron's continued progress.

From "SueCornish"...

She does not have Internet surfing capability for the moment, so she emailed and asked me to post this info:

"It's going to be a while before I can get on cornsnake.com due to the security at my job. I still don't have internet at home.

Let everyone know that Saffron is doing great. The vet was so pleased that she told a couple of the office technicians that Saffron was the way all snakes should be; active, tongue flicking and exploring; she did not stay still for one minute during the exam. Saffron still has to take the Baytril ever other day for two weeks more and then still in quarantine for another 2 weeks. She had two rat pinkies last night and was still looking for another one two hours later. She'll be feed every five days, 2 or 3 pinkies at a time. Vet wants her to have multiple small items frequently until she gains back her weight and then up the food size.

Dr. Connolly was really surprised by the results. Saffron just needed to be treated right."

"Suecornish" still does not have access to the Internet, only emails. She asked me to update everyone that Saffron is doing really well. She said:

"Saffron is amazing. She pooped the 25th, she got 2 rat pinkies the 27th and she pooped again the 28th. I think she figures if she poops she'll get feed. She is the most active corn I have ever seen - always cruising her tank looking for food. I'm going to do two or three more feedings three to four days apart with small items and then give her a good old plump adult mouse and see if that satisfies her."
