Considering Raising Feeders

Here's a good thread on killing them:

http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16536

I'm glad I found this feeder thread. I was thinking about small time feeder breeding. I just have the one snake now, but really interested in getting at least one more. Not enough snakes to justify breeding my own feeders, but they'd make cute pets until their big day.

Nice thread, and I really appreciate Productmur's reply, that was great.

If the smell bothers you look into ASF's I have a colony of them right now. My hatchlings love them too. Plus my female ball python eats them too.
They can be a little more aggressive. I fed off most of my adults because they would attack anything you put in the cage including hands. I kept 8 females and 2 males. Last month 6 of the females had their first litters and that was 65 babies, so far I have 2 new litters and thats 24 babies together.
They produce a lot, which is another reason I like them.

Also with handling babies(I breed mice, dwarf hamsters and asf's) I remove the adults first. I put them in a 5 gal bucket with a treat mealworms or cat food etc. Then I sort out the litter, cull the sizes I need and I usually cull all the males in my mouse litters. Anything without fur goes right into the freezer and anything with fur is gassed or neck broke. Depends on how many I have to cull.

Reading through this entire thread was actually so informative for me. I have one snake, and have been pondering whether to start a 1:1 colony in my unused 10gal tank. But the smell has also deterred me from already doing this. I have no idea how I would kill the offspring, I'd have to make my husband do it cause even the thought of them huddling together in the freezer for heat makes me sad lol
Anyways, I appreciate all the advise and tips that were geared towards the OP.
I now know how to start, what to do and what to expect if I decide to venture this route!
Thank you! :)

Another possibility may be to place the rodent being fed off in a cage that contains a baited mouse/rat trap that will do the job. Not really efficient for putting down large numbers of rodents, though.

Not a good idea. I've had mice (in my garage) get caught by the leg or lower body and carry the trap around for a few days. And a direct hit to the upper body isn't exactly quick, anyhow.
