Corn Snakes in California

Hi I wonder if somebody can help me. I'm trying to find out about getting a corn snake, for somebody who's living in California. Are there any state laws that govern keeping of snakes in the city? Are there any breeders in that state, if so where. What about places to get equipment? Or online stores to buy that equipment? Also what about frozen foods supplies, do stores keep frozen foods for feeding snakes there?

I'm UK based, and have been having trouble finding US based sites that deal with this. :(
Thank you for your help

Sorry about the typo, where I say city, I meant state, I just noticed it after I submitted the thread. :(

As far as I know, there are no state laws prohibiting the ownership of corn snakes, although to fully legally informed, you should check with your county and city laws as well.

I live in San Bernardino county and there are none (that I know of!)...hard to imagine, tho, that my 15" 8g cornsnake could cause any ruckus, hehe. =)

Where do you or the intended cornsnake owner live and maybe other California residents can help out. =)

Hi, sorry that I ha vent answered your post, thank you for the message. I just got an e-mail back and that person lives in the central valley area. Do you know of anybody in that area that breeds corns?

Thank you.

I don't think there are. I live in Tustin, in Orange County, and pretty much all of my neighbors know I have snakes. 3 years, and no cops yet, so I think it's okay. :grin01:

Oh yes, I got my corn snake at Radical Reptiles. But at California Pets, I see them all the time. Right now, I think they have an amel, an anery, and a snow. They used to have more, but I guess they sold them.

On the other hand, I got my ball python at a Reptile Breeder's Conference in Anaheim. Bill and Kathy Love were there. They had loads of corns, if you're willing to wait till next year. :shrugs:

Oh my gosh, I keep thinking of things after I post.

If corn snakes are illegal, I doubt that so many petstores would sell them. I mean, some dingy little one on the corner might be selling illegally, but I see them in California Reptile Expos, and some pretty big chains, so they must be legal.

Thank you for your reply. Are those stores good places to buy corns, and how much would a starter pack of a terrariuim, heat mat, thermostat and thermometer cost, together with the snake? The other thing is, I live in the UK, and have no idea where those places are, are they close?

Ooooh. You're in the UK. Oh, nice, I just reread your thread, and I'm like "Dur!"

Where in California does your friend live? If he lives somewhere around where I do, then I can give you the addresses for those pet shops. I've only been to Radical Reptiles a coulple times, and I don't really remember how it's like there. Califonia Pets has some knowledgeable staff, though. Of course, they're not as good as a breeder, but I don't know of any. :/

All I've managed to find out is that they live in the central valley area, is that close to you? Thank you so much for your help:)

No state laws against corn snakes here. There are a few breeders, most in southern California.

T&J is a member here, located in CA. (http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/member.php?u=5105)

[email protected] is a breeder located in No. Cal.

Carol of http://www.lowbellyreptiles.com/ is a member here, and she is in the San Francisco bay area.

Hope that helps.

All three of the breeders I listed are fairly close to the Central Valley. I am in Modesto, about an hour or two north of that area, but I am not a breeder (yet!). Any of the three could probably meet your friend's needs.

There's not much specialized equipment, save heating. A ten to thirty gallon aquariam with a screen lid, available from most pet stores. Hides are easier to make than to purchase. Water bowls, again at any pet store. I buy my feeding bins at WalMart. Plastic shoe box with lid, $1.23.

Heating, either UTH or heat cable, is best bought from a web company, as most local petstores not specialing in reptiles don't carry much. I bought mine on eBay :)

For only one or two snakes, buying in bulk isn't practical. Many local pet stores carry frozen pinkies and fuzzies for anywhere from $.79 to $1.99, live mice from $1.49 to $2.99. If buying from a breeder, odds are the snake will eat F/T, though some still feed live.

Awwwwwwwwww....I got my Pumpkin at Radical Reptiles! :)

And no, Cornsnakes are not illegal in CA. :) I don't know what much is really...I DO know you can't buy or sell Rubber Boas. Bah!

You can't buy or sell rubber boas? That's strange. I think the same thing applies to ferrets, though I think you can keep them. There are some strange laws out there. I would think if something is dangerous, it should be outlawed entirely. Like, no one is allowed to keep tigers at all, unless you have a licence. But I think anyone can get a ferret if they get it outside the state. That's stupid. If they were dangerous, they shouldn't be allowed at all. On the other hand, I, personally, think they're not dangerous and think they should be allowed to sell.

Hehe, and in California Pets they sell ferret stuff, just not ferrets.

I'm not in the Central Valley area, so I can't help you there. :/

To be legal in California, ferrets must be certified as spayed or neutered. The reason they are illegal is the agriculture lobby feels they would pose a threat if fertile ferrets go loose. Attempts to change the law and make ferrets legal have become annual (and futile) events.

Its funny you should say that, I used to keep and breed hamsters and one species of hamster, the Chinese Hamster is illegal to keep in California. The other three species the winter white, the campbells and syrians are all ok.
