Corn Snakes in California

Ah, I see. That makes sense. I think that there should be laws like that for pretty much everything. Well, sort of. In some towns, people have to have their cats/dogs fixed or they have to pay for a breeder's license. I think we should have laws like that for everywhere, and for other creatures (at least the ones that people can spay/neuter).

That's queer. (About the hamsters.) What's wrong with the Chinese Hamster? Are they endangered or something? *raises eyebrow*

I have no idea, its something that I've learnt from members of the USA Hamster Club. The president of the club, lives in California, and she was the one that told us. Its not just Cal. there are a few other states that have banned them from being kept as pets.

Oh yes, from Wikipedia: "Of note, some US states such as California regard the Chinese hamster as a pest, and as a result require a special permit to own, breed or sell."

I think that's stupid. Rats can be pests too, apparent by the rat poison (put out by the city) in our back yard. But they don't require a permit.

I think it's more then just the fact that they are pests, in regards to those animals that require permits to raise or breed, it's that they could survive quite readily if they escape and that they could readily reproduce. There is a fear that certain types of rodents (ferrets, the Chinese hamsters, gerbils, and a few others) could over run the population of native species and have an adverse affect on the environment.

That's not to say that the problem doens't already exist, because I am sure it does to some point, but more to insure that it doesn't get any worse.

Then you have the other end of the spectrum - permits that are required to own, breed, and sale animals that are native to the state (such as Cali Kings, Rosie Boas, and several other popular pets). This time it is to prevent the wild population being wiped out by the demand for those animals. Crazy in some ways, because that little nest of sparrows that you save from the cat after the mother was killed would be considered illegal the moment you brought them into your house.

Ya have to love California... the state where half of everything you do will get you into trouble with the law.

I was actually looking up the ferret thing a few months ago, and I found that people want to make them illegal because they can "attack and maim small children." That is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard. A dog can do that. So can a cat. Heck, a bird can do that. Pretty much any animal can, if it has the mind to.

I can understand the environment stuff, but the "other side of the spectrum", as you said, is... kinda weird. We need liscenses to own Rosie boas, etc.? If so, I can think of a better way to protect the environment without making dumb laws like that.

Yep. Everyone in America is sue-happy, so pretty much anything you do, people will analyze it for its sue-money-ness. If they can get some cash out of it, they'll sue.

That actually happened to us about a year ago. We were parked, and my mom was about to get out of the car, and zoom! Some lady, probably about early 20's, swoops into the parking lot next to us, and gets her side mirror like ripped off by the partly open door. She came out saying, "Sorry! I'm so sorry!", and we thought she knew it was her fault. And then a couple weeks later, we find out she's suing us. And then she lies at the trial, saying she can't afford the 500 (about) dollars for repairs. I mean, if she or her parents can get themselves a car, I'm sure that they can afford $500. And the lady probably has a job, and I'm sure she can make $500. At the time, I was 12, and I had over a hundred dollars in my bank account just from saving my allowance. And if I could save that much from a $4 a week allowance, I knew that she could make $500. And we actually lost the case/trial thing, probably because my mom is Japanese and isn't as eloquent with words, and the lady was. The lady could manipulate her words and stuff, but my mom couldn't, and she doesn't know a lot of words in Japanese. I was really mad.

Sorry for the rant, but I was seriously PO'd.
