I am looking into buying a corn snake and i wanted to know roughly how much it cost to keep it for 2 years?
(i will keep it for its whole life i just wanted to get a rough estimate)

A lot depends on if you already have a set up already....(tank, UTH etc.)

Well a 20 long and heating stuff will be about 100$ plus 2.00 average a week for food. So about 300$ for 2 years. Probably less depending on price of feeders.

here, try breaking it down....

snake cost- about $25-60 (depending on how old, morph, etc)
terrerium- at most $40
substrate- about $10
heat pad- about $15
hide hut and water dish- $10
food- depending on where you get it and what kind:
-pinkie- $1
-fuzzy- $1.25
-hopper- $1.40
-adult- $1.50

Feed about once a week, and refill substrate supply for one snake maybe twice.

Jynx breakdown looks pretty accurate except for the terrarium/cage/tank may be a little more expensive. What wasnt included is
a good thermometer $8
a dimmer/rheostat for each heat pad $20
that completes the basic setup ( i think)
additional stuff
tree branch for climbing if bought $15 can get from outside free
background (aquarium tank) $2 per foot
plastic plant $1 - 4

Once you get your initial setup done (shouldn't cost you more than a few hundred at MOST), the only real cost of keeping a snake is food (I pay $0.63 a week -Canadian- for hoppers), and the occasional substate change (again, depends on what you chose to use, and how often you change it).

That's it. I'd say $4-10 a month. IF that. Food, and substrate. I pay $0.63/week... I use forest bed substrate ($6 new) and have never changed it, but I do bake it once and a while (every couple months).

Depending on how you want your viv to look like you can always cut your cost by using house hold objects in your viv. Like using a old mardgrine dish fliped upside down with a hole cut in it as a hide. you can also use paper towels as substrate. you can use a rubbermade container for a viv. One more thing to think about is what a vet bill can be if your snake gets sick. Good luck.

I don't have a rheostat for my UTH, and it's just fine on temps, so you might not need that. I spend a little less than $1.50 for adult mice as my local petstore sells 12 for 16.99.
Reptile addict: I don't think anyone was trying to insult you. Your answer was great, Jynx and Gator just broke your assessment down to smaller units to make it even easier to see.

First off, welcome to the forum :wavey:

There are a lot of different factors to consider as everyone has already pointed out. It would depend on how you were planning on setting the viv up. The bulk of the cost will be purchasing the snake, the viv and the heat source(s). After that it is relatively cheap maintaining the snake. Feed and bedding won't cost too much on a weekly basis. The additional cost of electricity to heat/light the viv is the unknown.

When we built our big terrarium, complete with a 100W heat lamp, we found our electricity went up a bit, that's probably also because we use energy saver light globes through the whole place so the bill is pretty low usually. My first terrarium was a lucky find at a flea market, I paid about $8 (converting to US dollars for the majority of the forum members) for it. We went to an expo a few weeks later and I bought 2 shatchlings and an undertank heater and used butcher paper for the first few months, so my costs were much lower than if I'd bought all new stuff and bought my snakes at a pet shop. You can do it on the cheap, but remember that you're responsible for a life there and you will need to fork out a whole lot for vet bills if your snake gets ill. The initial settup can be dirt cheap but be prepared for incidental costs.

you cant really put a price on it you have to just go look arround see who is cheaper and defantly buy stuff that is recomended by people who know what they are doing. i know all mice and rats here $1.50 each pinkies- adults, so ya and i got a cage, bedding, waterdish, uth, heat lamp and red bulb and a hide and a therm for $40. its diff for everyone check arround and get the best deal you can but make sure you get what you paidfor. also check vets arround you
