cupboard viv conversion

this sounds like an awesome project! i'm jealous ;). the probe above the plexi sounds right. my two other thoughts at this point: remember which woods are snake safe when constructing the door. even if they are sealed, better safe than sorry. also, there are so many types of sheet plastic out there. we call them all plexi, but i'm sure there are ones that are more heat safe for the floor. maybe even a scratch resistant one for the door? good luck!

Not too worried about it being scratch resistant as its for my corn anyway, i have got some solid oak lined up for the door frame :)
And if i remember correctly the melting point for plexi is 130?

Thanks jess, i did consider it, but my corn loves to burrow, so im gonna have a few inches of aspen in there :)

Ah right, ill bear that in mind, if i still have enough plexi to cover the base ill use that if it comes to me needing to buy more ill tile it instead. Although plexi will be easier to remove if i need to get the the heat mat

Got bored today so tried to make 'tango' more comfortable in his current homr until i make his new one.
His new home will only the equivilent of 1 sqaure foot extra floor space.
But here is his old vic re-aranged, as he loves to explore, so this should keep him happy for now :)

Update time guys and girls :)
Made a start, i have stripped the unit down of doors, drawers, draw runners and dividers.
He it is as it stands, i have also marked out the panel for the back, and marked out the bits of wood for my small custom interior idea :)

Oh my the photos are huge! Lol!

Question: in one of the photos we can see 2 white vents. Is that just for air flow because the viv is so big or does it have a different purpose? I'm also looking at building a new home for Martha, now is there such a thing as having too big of a viv for the size of the snake?

The white vents are in the viv he is in at the moment, they are there for airflow, lets cool airnin through the bottom and warm air out through the top, otherwise it would just get too hot, it also prevent high humidity levels as if the warm air cant escape it will condensate on the top and cause a lot of moisture.

Sorry about the size of the pics, not sure how to change the size of them lol

As for the viv size, as a general rule of thumb, the snake should be the full length of the front plus one side of the viv. So if you have a 36"x18" this will be adequate for a corn upto 54" long (4ft6in) and provides 4.5 sqaure foot of floor space
My corn is 61" long (5ft1in) and is in a 36"x18" viv, which is what he came in when i got him 2 weeks ago.
The cupboard i am converting measures 42"x18" so is good for a corn upto 60" (5ft) and provides 5.25 square foot of floor space
To allow for a little extra space, i am making a 'two level' enclosure, the upper level will provide an additional 1.2 sqaure foot of floor space.
So the viv i am making is plenty big enough for any corn really. They can get to 6ft but most stop growing between 4 and 5 ft.
I have allowed for upto 6 ft as he is already a big boy and they never stop growing, their growth rate just slows.

But be advised, putting a corn snake in a viv too large can cause stress.
If you have a 4ft corn, the maximum length viv you want is 4 ft really.

Contradicted myself there, the dont stop growing at 4 - 5 ft, they just dont grow incredibly slowly and not much difference will be noticed

He he, I guess I can stop eyeballing the old tv unit to convert then (it's for a big tv & has all these shelves, cupboards & drawers. Absolutely perfect for giving some animal an awesome home & have loads of storage). Martha is still way too small for it. I didn't know that too big could be stressful for them, interesting. Thanks.

So yours being a 2 level means that your guy would be able to go up there he wishes?

Made a start on the interior today, still need to cut the arches out of the front facing panels, but here it is so far
