Daytona 2009

Another thing that was brought up previously and I think kind of fell by the wayside as we moved onto other ideas - what about door prizes?

While out shopping today I picked up a nice picture frame, good smelling candle and a glass pillar candle holder and some cool "rocks" that I thought could be used as a backdrop for snake photos for someone. Thought we could put those up as door prizes? Any one else have any suggestions? I thought the pic frame and candle would be good for any S.O. who maybe weren't into the snakes so much.

Figured we could give everyone who comes one (more than one?) door prize ticket. Pick a ticket and let that person come up and choose their prize? Maybe do a "white elephant"? Let me know - again, time is running out so we need some quick input/decisions and any other door prize ideas/donations. I also started a thread to see if anyone else wanted to donate any prizes for the raffles/door prizes that we have not heard from already.

I vote for the award being towards the advancement of cornsnakes as well. The award is going to be presented at a cornsnake dinner, is a Boa breeder going to care that we are giving them an award?

True - it will be corn fanciers there. Although the first two prizes I received are both ball pythons, lol! So it sounds like more people are wanting it to be corn oriented in the wording on the award. And that the woodgrain award is preferred. Sounds good to me!

The member I talked about did talk to Connie today. Here is an excerpt of what she said:

"...I just got off the phone with Connie. .. She said they will make it there, maybe even for the dinner but that's still up in the air a bit. She was happily surprised about the award. She said he has always used Rich with the business so that is what should be used on the award.

... Connie told me about times Rich and Dr. Bechtel spent together talking genetics, I think he will really be touched by this award..."

So, "Rich" it is! She had already talked to Connie before she received my email about the info for the little speech, so she will have to ask that later.

BTW, are the stones you got for a prize, fake, lightweight, rocks that will look good in photos? That is exactly what Bill has been looking for to use in his photo seminars at shows. Where did you find them?

I LOVE pineapple plants! I am growing a couple that I just cut off from store bought fruits - never saw variegated ones before! I want to win one of those, lol!

BTW, Bill said that one of the posters we can donate is the really nice okeetee corn with the Indian corn, and it is done on canvas so it looks kind of like a painting instead of a photo. Very high quality - I think this group will really appreciate it!

A door prize sounds fine to me.

Kathy I found the rock/glass things at Big Lots. They had them in orange, red, blue, green, and white as well as actual river rocks in black and also shells. They were only like $3 a bag. And that was my thought exactly - using them for photos...

Dave - one or two of the plants would be excellent for a donation. Would you prefer it for the raffle or as another door prize option.

I was thinking of a handful of door prizes - Jeff Mohr had also mentioned donating something for a door prize as well. I don't think we need a ton of door prizes - and obviously they shouldn't be as "high value" necessarily as the actual raffles.

I think door prize is fine. So, like, when you say 1 or 2, do you mean flats, or dozen?
BTW, did I buy a cornsnake from you, or is that a false memory? Where's my geritol?

Wow - how many pineapple plants do you have? Wanna trade some for some cute soft fur rats, lol?

Not sure if you bought corns from me - the ol' memory isn't what it used to be (actually wasn't all that good when I was 20, either!)

I don't know...lol...how many are in a flat?
And yes, you bought a candycane from me that I am bringing to Daytona for you.

Only if the rats stay in their pots. I was thinking maybe I got a cornsnake from Katie. I wreckin I've got around 60 pineapples in gallons, but I culled off about a dozen "super white-variegates to another section of the growing area. Started with a plant that had a very thin white edge on it's leaves 32 years ago, and have been culling ever since for wider brighter variegation. I grow a few other bromeliads, the orange flowers in this pic are about 6-7 feet tall. You might need to stop by with the shovel. I'm also a Univ of Fl Master Gardener.

VERY NICE! We play around with some bromiliads and orchids, but not in any serious way - we just get pretty ones and put them in and around the oak trees, lol!

You should start a plant thread, and post those photos with some captions. Some of the members would love it! Only a few of us will see them buried in here.

Thanks!

I'm in for the wood grain as well.

And I stand by my previous post about a cornsnake oriented award with mention of cornsnakes.

As far as door prizes, I can go either way. I'm bringing things to the show for sale and can easily donate one to a door prize or just keep the donations for the raffle.

Bill is helping me work on the wording right now. And I just went through the catalog and chose 3 plaques, any of which should work. They are all approx. 8" x 10" overall, and will cost approx. $75 with engraving (the prices shown in the photos do not include engraving - $15 extra). Any smaller than that will be too crowded, or the words too small, and it won't look very impressive, in my opinion.

The first 2 plaques are walnut with black plates for engraving. The only differences are the borders and the curved edges of one of them. The third is rosewood (reddish instead of brown, although you can't really see the red color on the digital image as you can in their catalog), with a different border. Y'all probably don't want to spend endless time looking through the catalog (like I did today, lol! - too many choices!), so unless you see something wrong with these, how about if we choose one of these three?

I will post the wording again as soon as Bill is finished. He is working on it in PhotoShop so it will be ready to email to them once we have agreed on the exact words (he can still easily change a word or two here or there when he is finished).
