Daytona 2010

Wow, missed this thread the first time around...

I'm pretty sure I'm going! :)

You better be!! I can't make the drive by myself (well, I won't be as long as Josh is still going, but still, you need to be there).

I have a feeling I will only be able to stay at the show part of the day on Saturday if we are organizing a big GTG/dinner/raffle again like we did last year. I got back too late and felt too rushed setting up last year and would like to get an earlier start on making sure everything is ready.

Katie, you know that I'll be around if you need any help!! Just let me know. :)

Well Katie and I were discussing doing a vacation and I had heard people on here talking about the National Reptile Breeders Expo in Daytona Beach. We are hoping to mix this into a week or so trip to Florida. Who all is planning on attending and anyone up for meeting up for drinks after the expo?

me and another breeder up here in canada, are taking a month long trip down to florida to do some herping, and beach lazing... and will include a trip to the expo :D

I am sooooo going!! Err I mean, WE are going!!

We have not gone ANYWHERE since 2003, so we are due.

My only concerns are....
I'm a bit shy, believe it or not! I will be nervous meeting all of you and am praying I don't come off as a complete butt.... :)

I will be leaving my pet rats for 3 or 4 days and will be worried about them and feel guilty that they will be missing out on their nightly playtime.

And my husband has Celiac disease, so feeding him is going to be a challenge, even though we WILL be at the dinner.

I'm extremely shy so you certainly won't be the only one! And most places have gluten-free options; or at least we do in MI so hopefully Daytona will, too! As for the rats...while the cat's away.. :)

To all you shy people... we'll get ya over that. :grin01: I remember my first year at Daytona ('08). It was a TON of fun, even though I was completely starstruck/terrified/shy (believe it or not). I felt like a lost puppy dog following Katie and Nanci around everywhere. :grin01:

Bethany and Katie, I'm the same way. I've always been shy, but the good thing is everybody will be in good company. :)

I'm still tentative on going, but I looked at plane tickets this evening, and they should be affordable. The only issue I have is transportation to and from the airport in Orlando, and from the hotel to the show. Does anybody know if they have shuttles that run that way, or possibly how much I'd be looking at for a taxi? I really don't want to rent a car because it's going to be expensive for me since I'm under 25.

DYK there's always Robbie's Daytona - Orlando Shuttle Service? :D I plan on taking that whole weekend off work, so let me know what day you plan on getting here, and we can work something out. :)

And if Robbie's Shuttle Service happens to be busy, Sheldon and I are planning on getting there a couple days before the expo and we're driving down so I'm sure we can give you a lift, too!

I love you guys. :D That would save a lot of money! (I just looked at Google Maps, and it appears as though it's around an hour long drive.)

Like I said, it's not set in stone, but I'll do whatever I can to make it - even if I can't buy any snakes. :)

If I can also hire one of your superb shuttle services... heck yeah, I'll make the trip. I've never been. It sounds like a blast.

Edit: Maybe those of us wanting to be shuttled can coordinate our flights to arrive around the same time...?

That sounds like a really good idea! I'm thinking about getting in on the 19th, just so I can have a day to relax and get comfortable prior to being so busy. I haven't decided on whether I want to leave on the 22nd (Sunday) or the 23rd (Monday), but I'm leaning toward the latter.

Yay Daytona! I've been looking forward to it ever since I missed out last year. Unfortunately, our fall classes start the week BEFORE, so that makes it a bit more complicated, but I'm pretty sure I'll be there! Can't wait to meet everyone!

I so hope one of these years to make it down there for Daytona. It's just very hard money wise to be able to plan a vacation like that.

I'm still deciding on whether I should get tables this year....sure would be nice to walk around an play.

Maybe you should split a table with someone, Jeff!

Splitting really isn't the problem. As of right now I'm not sure where I'll be in August 2010. My graduate school education should be done by then and I may be in a new job. Consequently, if it is a job in academia, schools tend to start right then and it probably won't be the best idea to take a trip to Daytona when I'm supposed to be learning the ropes. However, if I don't have a job or one that has some flexibility then I'll of course be looking to go. The main problem right now is Wayne wants his table money NOW (Feb 1st) and I'm not sure I'm ready to dispense several hundred dollars or more on something that may not be a sure thing. I may just wait this year until it gets closer and see what happens. Maybe a visit only will be easiest without all the packing and displaying of snakes? :shrugs:

The last thing I typed before I went to bed last night was "YAY Ryan!!!" I guess it didn't take. So better late than never!!

For those worried about costs - the hotel room rates are valid for up to 4people per room. Each room has a pull out sleeper sofa. I know last year we had some people bunk up to split room costs.
Since rates are going to be the same as last year it will be $79 for a standard suite and $89 for a one bedroom suite (bedroom actually is a separate room). Most of the rooms are one king bed - a room with two queens costs a little more. Since it is an extended stay hotel they are geared towards long stay business travelers which usually just want a room with a king bed. All the rooms also have a full kitchen - full size stove, fridge, microwave, dishes, etc...

aha, Jeez, Internet hates me! But thanks Nanci, Will be nice to go on a vacation, and even more so, when it will be reptile related!! And no one that doesn't like snakes is coming, so its even better.

You, shy?? Really? Weird...

That is one of my favorite LOL-thingies...both Trent and I drive pretty quick (not overly fast, just slightly over the speed limit), so we'll make up for the time 'lost' while you drive.
