I'm in the process of getting a new snake since we lost Candy. Obviously she was sick and I don't want to take any chances that my new pet will contract it from anything in the house. I've already tossed the substrate, frozen feeders, cardboard hides, etc.. The new snake is larger than Candy was, so even though I could wash the ceramic hide and water dish... they're probably too small anway.

How crazy should I get when cleaning? I was planning on dousing every cleanable surface with a bleach solution. Should I worry about the air in the house? Candy had been on the couch a few times... do I need to figure out a way to clean the cushions?

Please let me know what you all think I should do. Having lost one already I want to be as careful as possible.

A 5-10% bleach solution is fine. Wash everything and rinse it well twice....then rise it out again before you rinse it out.
Unless you live next to a toxic dump, the air in your house should be fine.
For your soft furnishings. Well I use a mister with dilute disinfectant...There is a specific brand over here, so I guess there will be one your end.....
Best of luck with your new snake.....

I do a lot of tank to tank changing, and after any type of disease process or parasitic infection (fish, not reptiles) I always use half strength bleach solution and soak the entire tank. After that I use a dechlorinator, but if you rinse it well and let it stand open the bleach will dissipate on its own. As far as the cushions and other furniture, you could try spraying it with lysol, but I think that's probably over kill. I can't say for sure about snake infections, but the majority of microorganisms die without a host within a max of 72 hours anyway. I think you'd be safe bringing in another reptile if you've cleaned the habitat well. Sorry again about Candy. I know that was a really hard way to enter the hobby, and it's great to hear that you're going to give it another shot! Looking forward to seeing your next.

Thanks for your advice guys! (or gals :p)

I'm buying from this site, actually. You can see a picture of my new girl here:

She's the second one down. Mrs. 07f36. I looked at hundreds of morphs yesterday and in the end, that one remained my favorite by far. Her size is also comforting. She sounds like a good eater. Candy was a 2007 but only 19 grams and she had looked underweight. I'm hoping to get a healthy girl this time.

I wonder what to name her?

Wow! I've been drooling over that thread all afternoon! Great choice, Raiyne! She's absolutely beautiful, as they all are. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite from that group, they're all just so gorgeous. Best of luck with her!!

What a beauty!

If you really want to do overkill, after the bleach solution, and after much rinsing, you could clean with an ammonia solution, and then super rinse again. Ammonia kills coccidia. Coccidia are the parasite associated with crypto.

I super cleaned the vivarium, table, chairs, counters and more. The tank has been set up again, minus proper-sized hides/water dish. I'm not sure whether to get them tomorrow or wait until the new arrival so I can better judge sizes. She should be shipped either tomorrow or the next, so she'll be here soon.
