DIY viv background for my beardies (pic heavy)

Kali

lost cause
I'll post this here, as the viv won't be for corns. But for them I work in the same way so maybe that does't matter.
I bought a glass viv and have finally started to make the fake rocks. Turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself! And of course, being clumsy as I can be, I cut myself in the process :D
In the pics you can see the buildup, layering, layer with colour in it, the mess I made and the (almost) finished viv.

Let me know what you think.

Looks great! My brother did the same thing for his uromastyx and one of my corns! Its a lot of fun and looks great!

That looks incredible, so much nicer than the pre-made backgrounds. Quite the cut too. What exactly is it made from, and finished with? And is it easy to clean, durable, etc...?

The boards are a type of isolation. I'm not sure of the word in english, extruded polystyrene is a litteral translation. XPS in short. It's easy to cut (a bit too easy sometimes :D)
The finish, same thing, litteraly it's tile-glue, the stuff you glue tiles with. In powder form, so you can make it as runny as you want. I don't know about over the big pond, but out here it's used a lot as finishing. It's quite durable. But with beardies, you can get chips here and there caused by their sharp nails. Never had problems in corn vivs though. It helps if you put several layers on top of each other. I also put the colouring in the glue, easier than painting it all afterwards, and if you do get a chip, it won't stand out because the colour is already underneath.
Cleaning is easy imo, not with a sponge because it will rip to peaces, but with a bruch like one for dishes it works fine. If you use something harder it'll maybe break pieces out...
