Does this snake look overweight?

Tell her NO MORE RATS! They are like corn snake steroids. ONE SMALL ADULT MOUSE every 2 weeks is more than enough. She is killing him with bountiful mooses!

I dont know how long she has been feeding him rats, but yes, I thought that was excessive. He's only about 4 ft long, and the only corns I've heard of eating rats were over 5 ft, if that even makes a difference.

But really, those mooses are way over the top! How can even digest those antlers?! :p

Holy cow!! What a porker. If your friend thinks that snake is a normal weight set them up with an eyeglass apointment ASAP!!

Maybe you could show her what normal adult corn snakes look like so she has some comparison. I know as a newbie I am constantly worried about my snake being normally sized--if she could "see" the difference in size maybe that would help her realize a weightloss intervention is needed.

Also, you said the snake doesn't get out and get exercised. Is she too busy? Scared? Perhaps you could work with her about handling the snake more--get her out and moving around some!

well, I've seen worse if that means anything. But yes, huge fatty. And by seeing worse let me tell you, you don't want it to get worse. I like the swimming and stair climbing suggestions, I also give my boys a little work out by using the salad tongs with their food. Make em' work for it! Just because it's f/t doesn't mean they get a free ride, chase that mouse around the room!
(some snakes won't do this, but it's worth a shot and every little bit will help at this point)

Here is what he might look like in a few years if he continues on the road he's on now:

Gross, eh?

Ewww, that is the worst picture of obese corn snake!

According to the picture, wow that's huge snake!
Man, it need really bad exercise, but hey take it to the "snake gym". lol

Update

Just an update on Chester, my friend has moved him down to her room and is exercising him a lot more! She takes him out just to move around at least once a day (hope that isnt too much?) and gives him baths. She told me she is going to cut down his food intake to one mouse, instead of one rat. Thanks for all your help everyone! Being the "new corn owner" I couldnt really convince her, but all the experienced owners/breeders, and the experts here, have really helped!

Its also good to know she has a pretty Reverse Okeetee on her hands. :p

Yep, swimming is the fun one ^_^. I have been told that if you take them for a swim before you handle them then it gives them a chance to poo so they don't do it on you (and it's great exercise!) so it's pretty much win/win.

In the summer-time I plan on getting a kiddie pool for them ^_^.

Jazz goes swimming a lot for just that reason. :p Chester has to have a bath for that reason too. :D

blargh...

ok, well this snake might soon belong to me... my friend needs to get rid of him to make room for ball pythons or her mom will kill her, and she wants to give him to me. I used to want him, but he didnt used to be so fat!! he's gradually gotten fatter and fatter over the last... year? year and a half? and I hadnt really seen him except under his hide until recently. and now I dont know if I want him... he's pretty and all, but he's just.... kind of gross and obese... I dont really want to let her down though. she's counting on me to take him. plus with three snakes already, and him needing a bigger viv, AND me having a tiny bedroom, I dont know what I'm going to do.

I'm sure as long as you didn't feed too often, it would eventually lose weight? At the same time you should not ever take on an animal you don't want.

Only you can make the decision on this one..

ya, tough call. It can be worth it to "rehab" an animal, to see them get better under your care. On the other hand, if you have a tiny bedroom and really don't want him it isn't really fair to you or the snake. You could always just help her re-home it to someone who wants it.

You know, you guys are being really hard a people (and animals) that are horizontally challenged. I cast a large shadow but I'm still a good person. I don't make fun of skinny people. I can't help it if I was born with an unusual need for pastry.
(And no, this isn't me in the picture)

i know this is an old thread but oh my goodness it's just what i needed to read tonight. one of my corn snakes that i gifted to another family is coming back to us this week. from what i understand it's grown a LOT... and since it was full grown and perfect weight when they took it two years ago... i'm very concerned.

i'll be sure to exercise him lots and feed him a normal amount. i'm pretty sure he was being fed ratties...

thank you all for this thread!!!

some of you (becky perhaps?) may remember valentino from a few years ago... he had some regurge issues when he was little... once i get him home, i'll post some pics of him.
