Ebook Readers?

After reading that you want color on your screen- there really isn't a way around it, get the iPad.
Personally, I don't like the damned device. I use it for work purposes and it annoys me as hell to have to utilize iTunes and roundabout ways in order to do things that every pc should allow you to do with ease(file transferring for God's sakes)

I think I'll probably be one of the last people to join the e-reader revolution....I just love paper! I love my hard copies! Though I did play with Nanci's iPad while in Daytona, and I think that works really really well as a format for magazines. I'd like one myself!

I read more with this in the paper backs, but that is just me. It is easy to but in my purse and take it to the dr office on the road on the beach, the park. I like kindle becouse when you read it look like a book. I cant say anything bad about it.

I'm pretty sure I could do just fine not even bringing my laptop.

Speaking of 3G- it's really nice if you're away from wifi. With ATT, you can pick between a small monthly package or a larger 2GB package. I guess $15 or $25/month, stop and start at any time, no contract. So I took my truck to get detailed, which took 3+ hours. They didn't have wifi, so the 3G was essential. So, I went through so much data that I thought I'd better switch to the bigger amount for Daytona. And then I was never away from wifi and didn't use cellular data at all! But that's okay- I can just cancel the whole thing till I need it again.

The way I use the iPad is, take it outside at night (it even has a waterproof cover if it's sprinkling) read the forum(s), play Words With Friends, look at Facebook, look at Flipboard (an app that lets you pick your own selection ofcontent like Engadget, Uncrate, Apps, Twitter, Wired, etc.) browse a magazine, go back to CS, look at the radar, look at the hurricane track, look at the lightning strike app, go back to browsing the magazine- I pretty much never use my laptop the rest of the evening.

Yea you use your more like a lap top. Like i was saying befor if you are looking at it for more then to reading books go with the I pad. If you want Just a E reader I would go with a kindle

I guess this is a harder choice than I thought. I will have to think about it greatly. How sad is it that it feels like a life-or-death because I'm such an avid reader? Lol

I've figured out my biggest issue with both devices. I tend to read a lot in the tub and at the pool. I've dropped paper books several times (usually old romance novels or really old text books and rarely a brand new book). I can't imagine either the iPad or Kindle surviving a trip to the pool bottom. It sure would be nice to have a textbook at my fingertips without the weight though.

I read in a previous post that you bring your laptop/computer everywhere? Why not just download PDFs, etc, on the laptop then?
I don't really understand this ereader/tablet fad. To me tablets are underpowered netbooks without a keyboard, with no unique purpose. @_x At least ereaders have a purpose, but if I'm already bringing my laptop... I'd rather read on that.
If it's a battery issue or some weird convenience issue.... like maybe where you wanna read you'd get mugged for your laptop... I'd probably recommend the Nook, honestly, if the colour is more important than eInk. You seem computer literate enough. You should be able to download a converter and buy a pdf, kindle file, etc, and be able to read it on a Nook if the selection really IS that much smaller.
I also agree with the previous opinion that downloading digital backups of your physical books for free isn't really stealing... If it's possible.
Also, I heard a rumor that new versions are coming out soon? So you may want to wait for that if true. :) Even if the new versions are too 'spensive, it'll knock down the price of older versions so win-win.

Hailey, there's a device called aLOKSAC which is waterproof to 200 feet if sealed correctly. You can find them cheap on Amazon. I bought a variety pack which has a couple that fit my phone in its case and one big enough for the iPad. I carry them in my purse in case it rains, or put both devices in one if I want to sit outside and it's sprinkling.

The deal with a tablet is you don't need a mouse, it's instant on and off, no waiting for start up, it fits in my purse, it rotates portrait or landscape, it magnifies with just a finger gesture, all the apps are "instant," they don't require going to a website, or waiting for them to load up, you can switch instantly between an infinite number of apps, you can use your finger to pan around say a radar image, the tablet knows where you are for use in navigation, weather, things to do, whatever. Countless other reasons make it more useful, portable and fun than even a solid-state HD netbook.

:) I understand and respect your reasons but for me it's a little different. I guess because I'm a total geek so I know all the shortcuts with PCs.
I don't need a mouse for my laptop... It has the touchpad thingy on the bottom, like most laptops do. So unless I'm gaming it's fine. :p Good laptops [not netbooks] will have decent starting times. Mine is a little slow because I dualboot both Windows and Ubuntu, but before that was quick. Although Chromebooks boot up in about 10 seconds into ChromeOS... Directly into the Chrome browser, basically. My laptop fits in my bag (purses are evil ;P), not sure if there is a need to rotate but there might be an option... Magnifying on a laptop or computer is just as easy, by holding down and spinning the scrolly. Or the scrollbar on the side of your touchpad.
Apps... Are basically the equivalent to shortcuts on a computer. :) They open programs just as quickly if you're not using a dinosaur. I'm not too fond of touch screen tech so for me using a mouse to pan/scroll around an image is exactly the same. The fact I'm touching the screen doesn't bring ease to me. You can have a gps in laptops too, so it too can know your long/lat,etc.

That came out a little longer than expected lol. But yeah, anyways. It's for this reason that I can't get into tablets. Their purpose is identical to laptops... But they're no more useful (if anything, less useful from their reduced power, and lack of physical keyboard). I admit tablets tend to be a little more portable, depending on the sizes you're comparing... Vs netbook or Vs laptop. As for more fun... xD;; I dunno that's kinda subjective. They do identical things... So it's more like... if you have more fun using apps like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope over playing games that require Flash and more heavy use out of the CPU, RAM, etc. So in the end, to me it's like purchasing a second laptop for no reason, with no gain. It doesn't have any specific purpose, besides maybe the 10% chance I'm going somewhere where I wouldn't prefer or need to have a laptop, and would value convenience over function.

As for the water problem... a clear plastic bag always works! XD

Really though, they might make waterproof covers? O_O They should. I know a lot of people who read in bathtubs.

Thanks for the suggestion Nanci. I'll have to look into those.

As for the laptop thing, yes I do carry my laptop everywhere. It's an extension of my body nowadays. However, even though it's only roughly five pounds, it gets heavy after a while. I don't drive, so if I want to poison... I mean treat... myself to McDonalds, I have a two mile walk to look forward to. I like to browse the internet while I'm eating, but it would be easier to have various books at my fingertips instead. I typically never shut down my laptop as I usually have twenty things going on. For example, I'm using Firefox right now and have 13 tabs up (Mostly of threads from this site). I also have about 60 tabs opened up in Chrome because I'm adding books to my wanted list and am working my way through Amazon's book lists.

At any rate, my point is, I love to exercise my mind while I eat. It's mostly so I don't end up staring at people without realizing it. If I had an eReader, then I would have less weight to carry and I will have a choice of which book I want to read. I'm one of those people who will bring a hardcopy book with me and then decide I really wanted to read that book I left at home. An eReader would stop that problem.

And speaking of Angry Birds, I'm sure players will enjoy the attached picture.
