Egg tooth

So I've heard about the egg tooth for a long time but even though I looked at babies and photos that were supposed to show it, I could never quite see it... yesterday I realized I was looking in the wrong place XD

My first clutch of the season (of two, heh, small season, I'm busy, didn't breed much) started pipping yesterday! And I was curious enough about the egg tooth that someone I was chatting with pointed it out to me :D So here's photos of today! I also marked it up so anyone who was as lost as me can hopefully see it!

... I'd been looking for it between the nostrils XD I hadn't quite realized it's possibly a true tooth (?) (coming from the gums?)

Very interesting. I love posts like this that make me not feel so bad for examining everything so closely.
Looks like a little blade.

Thanks!

I'm amazed it's so tiny! I understood it was small, but this is really smal! I guess that's how they manage to slice their way out but never seem to accidentally slice up any adjoining eggs...?

That's just too cute! I think I have been able to capture the egg tooth in a picture once. Nice photo and pretty hatchling. :)

That's awesome! You have a very good camera...look at the detail on the eggs

Congrats on the babies!

Thanks!
Not sure how great a camera it would be considered now though, it's a Nikon coolpix 995, about 8 years old maybe? I just set it to near objects, take a ton of photos, and hope XD

Very cool, Adie! Actually, I am amazed that little thing can even slice through the egg at all. Is it sharp to the touch? Could it cut your finger? Interesting . . . Not that I recommend rubbing your finger on a poor new hatchling's nose just to find out ~LOL~
