Empty 55 gallon

Hey everyone, i purchased my corn about 2 months ago. He's doing fine, great eater, friendly, great pet. I have a fish tank that used to house saltwater fish (still has water, just waiting to drain it) and I'm looking for some suggestions of what to put in there. Any suggestions would be great, just no more snakes, my mother is deathly afraid of them.

I have an empty 55 gallon as well. I'm converting it to a tree frog viv. Are amphibians out of the question?

No not completely, only snakes. I thought she would warm up to my little 3 month old corn, but she runs and screams whenever I even come close with him. I'm open to fuzzy animals also, just need some ideas. She even says snakes were cursed in the bible. I really wanted to put a ball python down there but its completely out of the question.

Do you want a display animal, or something you can interact with?

I'm leaning toward something I can interact with a bit, but then again i'm open to any other animals, if i find them interesting i'll do some research and then dive in lol. Just no more fish, cleaning the tanks is annoying for fish

Have you considered Bearded Dragons? They need a lot of care, but make for very rewarding pets!

Well... bearded dragons are cool. And water dragons. Rats are awesome pets, though I usually prefer tiered cages with tons of toys over a big aquarium unless I'm breeding. Do you care if your new pet is high maintenance? Rats you just provide good food and places to hide and lots and lots of toys, new toys periodically are a must if you don't want them to get bored. Beardies require a lot of effort in food preparation.. sometimes I think they eat better than I do, but with proper care they are very rewarding pets.

I actually have and they seem like a good contender for the empty spot. How much preperation for the meals are we talking about?

That was going to be my suggestion as well. That would be a great size for one. There are lots of beardie owners here. If you really want to consider it, post a thread with that in the subject line, and I'm sure you'll get lots of great advice. Best of luck!

A 55 would not be great for a beardie. If its a 55 long anyway. They are too tall and the beardies can't get close enough to the lights, nor will it heat up well. Unless you build mountains in there for it to climb..or steps or something.
Tree frogs and anoles in one big tropical set up would be cool.
I would not put anything fuzzy in a 55. Not enough ventalation.

I agree with Tara in that heating and lighting a 55 for a beardie would be a challenge. It's not insurmountable, though- you'd just have to set the viv up so that there was a way for the beardie to get to within 8-10" of the UV light. The effectiveness of UV diminishes A LOT over distance.

I was thinking the same thing.. That, and a standard 55 is only 12" wide. Not enough for an adult beardie, IMO...

What about geckos of some sort? Other than that, I agree with tree frogs and/or anoles... =)

I'd do fresh water fish, instead of saltwater. Get an Oscar, or Texas Cichlid, or some Africans. Fresh water is much easier to take care of then saltwater.

I like the idea of dart frogs and anoles, but around how do you guys think could comfortably fit in a 55 gallon. Of course i'm going to further research the topic but any added advice is well appreciated.

I'm talking to a breeder about that exact thing now. I'm going to fill my 55 gallon with various tree frogs. He's helping me figure out how many, and which different types can live together. I'll let you know when I get more info. Right now all I know for certain is that if you get more than one type of tree frog, make sure their care requirements are the same and that they are about the same size so they don't eat each other.

leopard gecko! my mom ttold me no snakes and i was gonna get a leopard gecko but then i talked her into letting me have the snake which i still have to buy :) but they are great pets easy to care for and they can be bandled!

Crested gecko is a great choice or a chahoua. Both are rewarding pets and low maintenance animals. You can also convert the 55 gal into a tall tank by inverting it and having a screen made that open outwards with just a few hinges and screws:)
