Feeding and healing: questions.

I don't know what to tell you about the healing of you snake as I have never had to go through this, but don't appoligize for asking so many questions. This is not only helping you, but others of us as well. This will let a lot of people to know what they need to do.

Hope that your snakes heals soon and well.

Hmm, well it would be hard for me to say whats really going on without seeing it. I can't really tell from the pictures what it actually looks like except that it looks like a bad gash. Any chance you could post some more pictures?
Is there a flap of skin hanging there? If so it will die and the scales could be coming from there. At this point a vet would probably cut the dead skin off (but I'm NOT suggesting that you do that!). Anyhow, if you can get more pictures it would help.

Yeah, it is a flap of skin, and it does seem to be dying. I'd take more pics, but the only camera I have is a cheap one that I got second hand years ago, so I wouldn't be able to get a better pic anyway.

The scales seem to be coming off of the rest of his body, just the top layer, which I think is a sign of dehydration? (looked for hours, and I only found vague reference to this being a sign of dehydration) He IS drinking, though, and I've seen him in his water several times, so I suspect that he's getting the polysporin on his other scales, and it's keeping water from getting to them.

I bathed him yesterday so that he could soak up water (let him go through a wet towel to get the polysporin off his body) and so I could carefully inspect him. He doesn't have any discolored spots and he digested his last meal just fine (second feeding since the incident) so I'm pretty sure he's alright internally. There is a slightly hard, off-white-ish colored layer over the majority of the wound that I'm assuming is a scab, since there is absolutely no inflamation or discharge, so I was thinking of discontinuing use of the polysporin for a short time to monitor the condition of his scales.

Sounds like you're doing a good job there. I'd also be inclined to stop using the polysporin - it's going to be of limited use if a good scab has formed over the wound (the scab will stop the polysporin reaching the wound). Just keep monitoring the area and start using it again if you see any signs of trouble. Seems to be going well so far though.

Hehe, Exactly what I was going to say Kel! :wavey: It sounds like its going well so far! Continued use of the polysporin won't hurt if you start to get worried again... but Kel is right that you probably don't need it at this point.

Wonderful. I was a little worried I'd be yelled at for even thinking of stopping it. :p
Will be watching him closely for anything abnormal.
Very nice to hear I might be doing things right. I'll be sure to update if anything changes.

Start increasing the humidity now to prevent a more difficult shed than it might be. Really check him over after shed to make sure everything's come off. You don't want the problem of having skin left on and causing a problem.

Well, he shed last night. (we were in another hurricane and were in the dark, so he decided to slough at midnight. Argh!) I had the humidity up, so it went better than it could have, I suppose, but it was still difficult.
:p Nothing quite like examining soggy old skin for eye caps, by candle light.

He did drop them, though, and all skin is off (with much towel and water help) and he's looking wonderful. Pics below, as useless as they are, with their fuzziness.

One more step on the road to recovery...

How does the wound look? Still eating?

good to hear that he shed cleanly. Sounds like a good sign. Is the wound still closed up?

Wound looks wonderful. It has scar tissue looking skin over it, and is only a little pink (I don't know what that dark area is on the second pic, I think shadow? It's not dark ON him) and is smaller than before shed. He ate last Friday and digested it fine, defecated during shed. He'll be fed again next Friday, but I'm sure he'll eat fine. He's acting absolutely healthy, the rest of him is looking healthy again (back from the poor state just before he went blue.)

Gosh that is a relief, I hope he continues to thrive and that you guys down there in Florida get some rest from the awful weather you have had. Keep us posted on your little guys progress
