Fennec Fox adoption

i am hoping to soon adopt a fennec fox. i have contacted a few exotic animal adoption centers about pricing and information. i wont be going back to marine corps training for awhile as i broke my arm a few days ago. nothing major i was working on my truck and my friend had accidentally hit the block i had under the tire and it started to roll so i moved backwards and pushed as hard as i can to stop the truck and it did stop. as i was leaning against another car holding the truck until my friend put it in park well i thought he had it in park and i went ot get out and last minute the truck rolled back and crushed my arm in between the bumpers. soo with the money i have saved up i have decided i will adopt a fennec fox. as i like foxes and my ma would likeo ne too so im going to adopt her one too. i have bought most of the supplies for them all i need to do is build a sandbox for them to dig around in. (this is a suprise for my ma for the support and everything she has done for me) she thinks they are the cutest little things and she is big on playing with animals andthese little guys are balls of energy. below is a picture of a adult fennec fox. cute little guys ( sounds weird coming from a marine right? lol) i dont care how girly i look with a fennec fox but i want one and i would like to give 2 a very nice home.

any care information would be helpful :D i mostly know everything i need to i have also found a vet in my area for care and i have access to foods as its grocery store foods ( carrots, green beans, apples, cantelope, mixed veggies, cat and dog food and they can also eat most breakfast cereal)

any input would be nice :D

It takes a guy who is secure in his masculinity to own fennec foxes. I guess that proves you're a Marine! ;) And of course trying to stop a rolling vehicle amnd breaking your arm in the process proves you're a Marine too! LOL.

Fennecs are seriously cute. How domesticated are they?

Anyway, good luck getting one. I am sure you will be a good keeper.

they are as domesticated as a cat but with the personality of a dog sort to speak. they will be lively and fun and playful and excited to see you but fall dead asleep in your lap when they are tired. they can be litter trained and they can be kept in a ferret cage when no one is home. they only weigh 2-3 pounds and enjoy to be petted and played with. they do make noise like yips or light barks and they will pee themselves if over excited. they self groom and dont shed. when they get scared instead of biting they let out a slight odor from the tip of their tail but it doesnt stick like a skunk it goes away after a few seconds. they can be kept with other animals as long as its supervised and the other animal cant fit in its mouth. they do really good with cats and ferrets for play time.

btw wstphal- your comment made me laugh lol ;)

That's not an adult Fennec in that picture. That's a wittle baby. The adults just have a more mature look to them, and are a bit larger. They're also very intelligent little buggers, and require a lot of stimuli to keep them entertained.

i really cant tell in my picture as its al ittle blurry on my pc lol but thanks for the correction ;)

heres a video i found

From a lot of information I've picked up (would love to have a small group, but damn Nevada! CA allows them but not ferrets or ASFs? -_-), fennecs can make great pets, but need lots of stimuli, a good fence that goes into the ground (they dig like nuts XD), a good schedule, and you need to be able to deal with something that goes nuts when it's excited. It seems some will also enjoy the occasional bugs and rodents.

I dunno what I could add... maybe talk to a few breeders?

A pet store not far from here occasionally gets one in, and I've talked to the owners, who often make quite the pets out of their exotic animals. I asked whether they would learn to walk on a leash or recall like a dog, and they said, "not usually, and not easily". That leaves out taking them out for a walk or letting them into the yard. I hold the pups (?) when they get them in, and I find them to be extremely high strung, although gentle enough. And that whole sandbox thing? Oi! I don't like cat litterboxes, so I doubt I would care for fox litter boxes, either :). In the end, I decided to stick with my dogs--especially Foxworthy Fuzz. He looks like a red fox already. His ears just aren't as big :).

They're just about the cutest things I've ever seen, though! And soft. I like "soft" :).

A friend of mine has been thinking of getting one of these to. And they are cute! Though the video made my dog go bonkers and wonder where all the meowing came from.

Jealous! I've wanted one for a long time, though it will be an even longer time before I ever can get one.

I've heard that they can be destructive when bored, but if they are getting regular attention/play that shouldn't be an issue. I've also heard that they are more like cats than dogs in their temperament... can be very affectionate but also very stubborn. They don't respond to training like dogs, and handful don't ever learn to recall to their own name. That's not to say they can't be trained, they just require a lot more patience, or so I've read.

Good luck! I hope to see pictures when all is said and done! :D

So what you are saying is they are like ferrets combined with a cat, dog and fox? :sidestep:

I've been around a couple of them. All I can say is I will enjoy other people's Fennecs! They are quite cute, and tolerate handling, but aren't my cup of tea in the personality/care department. Of course, I've raised chameleons and seahorses that take tons of care and I never lay a hand on them, so I guess it's really a matter of taste!

There was a pair at the Hickory show for $4000, which seemed high. I think $1,000 per is more typical pricing.

baby fennecs ar kits lol not pups good guess though ;) and you can take them out on leashes they will walk just like a dog. they have the energy of a dog.. the play time like a cat where they get over excited... and the curiosity of a ferret. they will get along great with other animals although fennecs will wanna play more. and walking can only be done in the summer because they shiver under 68 degrees. and they love to lay in the sun. i can feed it pinky mice mealworms plants stuff like that.. they dontn eed water because they get it from there food and their bodies store it. im ready for the high strung over excited-ness of these little guys lol

I'm debating over one of these, or a serval.
The serval needs a lot more space, so I should look into these guys more.

From what I've learned they don't always like to be handled, some actually hate it.
They're pretty wild and crazy, and they're very smart.
Plus they love meal worms.

what the breeersi talk to have told me is it all depends on the fennec. some will love you after one day some wont love you til 1 year later.... so will wanna cuddle with you everynight or sleep on your lap when they are tired. all depends on the fennec. usually if everyone interacts with it the fox will usually grow to love the whole family. i seen a few where the owner walks in in the morning and the fennec goes crazy in excitement to see the owner. oh and i know a few breeders who breed servals... but those they say you shouldnt keep as pets along with any big cat because you cant declaw them, they are much stronger than you so if the wild instinct kicks in they can and will possibly kill you.. its all on tasted. do you like small and fast and cuddly or big powerful eating and killing machine?

People could say the same thing about people owning big snakes. ;)

I think it really depends how much you research your animals you're getting, a serval can be anywhere from 15 - 40 lbs. So I'm sure it could really hurt a human, kill perhaps but I do have my doubts. It's just like a snake COULD kill you. But why would it? I don't think I look like dinner to a 30 pound cat.

I'm sure my German Shepherd could aloso do some decent damage as well if that was the case.
Just my 2 cents.

There is always going to be debate on owning exotic animals, as there will be debates owning snakes.

I see what you're saying though, and I think I need to research the topic more.
I'm not jumping into this any time soon.

Foxes are very cute and cuddly too though, so as I said I just need to research those guys more as well. :)

i have been doing my research for awhile now. i even seen videos on youtube of fennec foxes as pets. any pet can really hurt you if they wanted too. if your warm like food and smell like food and move like yfood then your probably going to get bit. all depends on how you spend time with the animal. these guys arent hard to care for and pretty soon they could be endangered because they are on the verge of endangerment because people hunt these little foxes in the wild for their furs. so they are trying to make them more house pets because they are small and playful..

Ah neat, well I'm sure there are a lot of people who would love to have those guys.

Whats the average litter size? Do you know?
Just curious about the endangered thing.
