FIRST CLUTCH!!!

ForkedTung

Serpent Mound Monk
After waiting for a week ,like the expectant father I am. I woke up this morning to six perfect eggs from my Amber female ( sire was a Butter) laying. By the time i got home from work I had 10 more. I was more than happy, not only becasue this is my first time breeding, but because both the mom and dad were virgins. SIXTEEN sweet little eggs, they all look very, white ( the pinkish one was the last laid and was still soft at the time) and healthy. Three more girls to lay, looks like I'm off to a great start. Thanks for looking.

That has to be sooo exciting! Sending good health vibes to all those beautiful eggs!

Thanks for the thoughts or should I say vibes?

My Classic het Amel, Bloodred, Charcoal girl [from DRIZZT80] was bred to a Beautiful Bloodred boy and who is fat, pre-lay shed and resting in the lay-box, should be producing any day now too...so cool...:spinner:

DOUBLE CLUTCHING

Well, My Amber girl decided to double clutch on me...ANOTHER 6 perfect eggs...no sluggos. Thats 16 plus 6 eggs. I candled them and they all have veins. Amazing: my first cornsnake ( in many, many moons) is a virgin, was bred with a butter corn virgin, is the first to lay 16 good eggs, then double clutches with another 6, no slugs or infertiles....WOW!!! I'm still waiting for her first clutch to pip, yesterday was only day 50...thanks for looking

PS) notice that they're a COMPLETELY different shape ( footballs vs. volleyballs)and size ( they're bigger this time) than the first clutch.

Congrats on the second clutch, looks like your breeding is off to a great start!

I look forward to pippy pics soon from the first clutch :)

Best wishes,

OK, here is my first pip EVER, SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTT!!!
One thing: If you read the above, I was expecting caramels and this looks a bit light for one...could it be an Amber, making the sire het/homo for hypo?

Congrats! As is getting stated in your other thread, it's more than likely an Amber and your sire is either going to be het Hypo or homo Hypo (it's masked in a homo Amel snake . . . Butter). Will be fun to see updates on the clutch.

How exciting!! Looking forward to more pip pics! You're off to a fantastic start this year, for sure.

My Ghost just double-clutched, and also eggs were like yours: first clutch roundish, second one more oblong but similar size. Funny! Still waiting for pips from the first clutch, though...

I DON"T BELIEVE THIS!

Not only did my male butter have a hidden gene, HYPO, but when I went in to check on the pips just now I saw pink eyes from the third pip!!! This means the Amber mom is het for AMEL...wow, I can't believe my luck, here I am expecting a clutch of all caramels with hets and I get Ambers AND Butters with hets....I couldn't be ANY happier...some of you may remember my thread where I almost lost ALL of my clutches due to a cheap thermometer...As a matter of fact I was candling them last night and saw NO movement and thought that maybe I had....:eatsmiley and now this...What an absolute joy this has been...

So only the three so far, 2 Ambers, 1 Butter...
Any dark Caramel heads sticking out yet or are we still looking at all potential homo Hypo's so far . . . ??!!

Nothing yet Drizz, but there's 13 to go.
This one pictured was the first pip and as I was moving some moss off of the other eggs with a pencil ( so as not to scare her)...she ( gives me the feeling she's a girl) raced across the box and repeatedly struck AND made little hisses at it, It was the most agressive display I've ever seen by a cornsnake...no warning, no head flare, no S- coil, just full on ATTACK MODE!!! It was very entertaining....So much for the Ambers are mellow theory.

Congrats on the pippies! They sure are gorgeous! nice to have unexpected hets pop up too.

Curious though, are you sure your amber is an amber? That first pippy/hatchling looks amazingly close to what some of the gold dusts I've seen look like. Could be that what you have might be an adult gold dust instead - given that you're getting unexpected butters and the amberish/gold dustish things.

Do you happen to have a pic of the parents?

Either way, the little hateling that is out is a cute one. =)

Thanks Jenn, Ya know that is a thought. There is something about the color that looks just a little off for an Amber. I've never seen any Golddusts in person, but I guess mine could be. I bought it from Amazon Reptiles. I do have some bad pics of her that I posted on here awhile ago with the sire...I'll see if I can link them, unfortunately she is in blue now,but I'll get pics as soon as she sheds...

Exactly, the color and mostly the eyes, though it will be easier to tell after it sheds for the first time. You can see some fresh pips of a gold dust from another breeder on this post I made of some pics Tim took at a friend's house: Third picture in this post is the one I'm talking about.

After your girl sheds, if you can get a head shot with her eyes, that would be the easiest way to determine if she might be a gold dust herself, though I know it can be difficult to get them to sit still. Also when the eggs finish hatching, you should have no straight caramels and a 50/50 split of butters and gold dust.

Their eye colors are exactly that bluish greenish AND they definitely have ruby pupils! That pic could've been taken here at my house!!! except of course it would've been blurry heh heh...I'm still waiting on Rich Z to give an opinion...

Yeppers... am looking forward to seeing what Rich has to say as well. Will be interesting to see what he thinks. And what they look like after shedding.

One thing that dawned on me, and I mentioned this in the other thread as well, is that it could just mean that your butters is actually a hypo butter and that too would eliminate any chance of a strait caramel in the clutch. Best way to test breed for that, IMO, would be to find a straight hypo a female to pair him with. The results would look something like:

Butter x Hypo =
100% normals het hypo, caramel, and amel.

Butter het Hypo x Hypo =
50% Normals het hypo, caramel, and amel.
50% Hypos, het caramel and amel.

or

Butter Hypo x Hypo =
100% Hypos het caramel and amel.
